Hi.

First trip post diagnosis and we are going to the snow!!

Besides hot tubs, is there anything I need to avoid/consider/etc for my 4yo besides hot tubs and sick people? Also, we will be with another family and I am sure they are going to want to use the fire place. Is this a no-no?

Thanks!
Edan.

How is her lung function? Depending on the elevation she may deal with altitude sickness and shortness of breath. Skiing is great exercise! Enjoy.

My daughter loves to ski. It's great to be outside, fresh air in the winter. She gets a lesson with a group of other children when we have gone(which I was so nervous about). I would just mention to the "ski school" she has CF and if their is a snack she needs enzymes. I also watched the lesson, most of the time anyway. She was fine! and loved it.

THe fireplace, in our case would not be a good idea. We have tried roasting marshmellows before and the smoke really irritates her airways. So, we do not do fireplaces.

Have fun! It's a great activity for the kids! OH and we also bought ski helmets for the kids.

Have fun! We started our son on skis when he was 2 1/2 and it has been a great sport for him. We live in the northeast and for him being outside every weekend getting fresh air has been great. He's 14 now and snowboarding is his favorite sport.

I am not sure where you are going but if you are going to be at a high altitude, for example Colorado, be sure to take it easy the first few days. Also keep well hydrated, even before you go. The altitude can effect anyone but I would be extra vigilant with a child with CF. My son has been to Colorado several times and has always done fine, but just be cautious.

Other than altitude and staying away from hot tubs I can't think of anything else. I guess if they have a heated outdoor pool she probably shouldn't go in that either. When my son was young we didn't know any of this and took him in the hot tub and the outdoor pool numerous times. He never cultured anything different afterwards but I wouldn't do it now .

If your daughter is in ski school just make the instructor aware she has CF. That way if anything were to happen where she needed medical attention the instructor would let ski patrol know about the CF.

In terms of fires in the fireplace for my son it has not been an issue. A lot of ski areas have very dry air anyway due to the cold weather, so the fireplace may dry the air out in your condo/chalet even more which might irritate all of you. Some fireplaces are smokey ,some aren't as bad, but again just use your best judgement in terms of what is best for your child.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks everyone. She is PS so I thankfully don't need to worry about the enzymes. I am obviously then more concerned with lung irritants and bacterial exposure. Turns out another 4 year old that will be staying in our condo has a cough. So, I guess that is my main concern now!!

Thanks again,

Edan.

Hi, altitude: a child tioll about 16 years sahould not go above 2000 meters (tahta is for any normal kid <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> ) - if you live in the low lands - about till 100 m. above sea level. Or at least take it step by step. Apar from that everything like for a normal kid. Have fun - wish we could go also.

i went on a ski trip with my dd when she was 1 y/o.It was high altitude, I think more than 2000 meters (the highest ski resort in Europe) and she had no pb at all.
