I dont' mean to hyjak this thread, but why are docs so against this? My docs say they Rx a particular anabolic steroid all the time (usually to men, but still). Just curious why the hesitation to Rx it? Is it the risk for abuse? Or is it what it does to your body? I think its similar as megace and other synthetic hormones they Rx all the time, only instead of female estrogen, its testosterone. So, I don't get why they'd be so against it??</end quote></div>

benefit to risk ratio.

although prednisone carries a lot higher risks as do other oral steroids we are prescribed vs anabolic and human growth hormone. at least that's what my doctor told me.

i saw a documentary on hgh/steroids/etc and from what i gathered there isn't much research done on anabolic steroids or human growth hormone and there will never be. they think it is unethical. i think the documentary was bigger/stronger/faster.

So, prednisone and other oral steroids we are rx'd are worse for us and have more risks? If your doc told you this, why would they be against it? Or are they against prednisone and other steroids too? I know my last clinic doc was really against rx'ing prednisone unless absolutely necessary.

I do think it bears mention that the dosage of steroid/growth hormone we as CFers are on is far different than the dosage of those who "dope" and use it for perfomance. At least this is what my doc told me. They are starting me on 2.5 twice a day and said the amounts the "athletes" use and abuse is like 40-60 (not sure if those are mg or what, but it still shows the HUGE difference... no pun intended. lol)

Wow, I have to say I'm kinda jealous. I've been trying to get my CF team to put me on this stuff for a little over a year now and they just laugh it off :/</end quote></div>

i've been trying for 3 years ahah. every time i go for clinic i always hint at it. they are extremely against it...</end quote></div>

I finally convinced my CF team to let me give steroids or GH a shot. They said they will investigate which one would be best for me to use and we'd go from there. Hopefully they don't take too long to come up with something because I'm pretty anxious to try this.
I also hope my insurance is up for it.

Sonia, No he works for boeing now. I think he has Regence blue shield and medco for rx's.

Lex, I agree with you 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mark and i have been researching the topic of anabolic steroids for almost a decade now, since he was 20 and he's 29 now. It appears that when used correctly, liver enzymes monitored, cycling on and off... that the Benefits FAR outweigh some of the side effects. And what medication/treatment doesn't have a side effect??? We NEED to find a way to get this into research! I mean, cures and all are great and I'm all for that. But as long as CFers are living longer and longer, and there still isn't a cure, we need something that betters the QUALITY of their life.

Sonia, can you ask your doc what that particular anabolic is? also if he'd be willing to correspond with another medical professional? Or do a phone consultation with Mark and the doc and we'll see if Mark's ins. wont cover it.
