Had a Fertility Consult Today

I would go in now and get the preliminary test out of the way. You can always wait a while after that while you decide on what you want to do but I wouldn't wait 6 months, you may be at your most fertile period in your life right now.

Hi Kristen, I'm so glad to hear your appointment went well and you got on well with your doctor. I'm not convinced by her theory on CF women's infertility being caused by poor nutrition. I know that if you are badly nourished or very under-weight your periods often stop, but clearly this is not the case for you! I am a good weight for my height and have been unable to conceive for 9 years and all the CF women I know of who have needed assisance with conception have needed it because of CM problems (or other gynae problems unrelated to CF).

From your description of your CM it sounds very sticky to me ('rubbery' I think you said?) If I were you I'd want to start down the route of being referred as soon as possible. I know things probably happen quicker in the US private system than over here, but its now 18 months since I was referred and I've still not got anywhere. If you get pregnant naturally in the meantime you won't have lost anything. With CF, we never know quite what the future holds, and I'm sure you'd rather be pregnant with your current good lung function than risk waiting a year and it being lower.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts and you may feel quite different! Good luck with whatever you decide! xxx

I would recommend setting up the initial appointment and seeing what the RE recommends-different doctors often recommend different things. You are obviously very committed to getting preganant if you have been charting for over 6 months. The age specific guidelines your ob spoke of, to me do not really apply for CF women. For most of us, the younger we are, the healthier we are, and the quicker we can bounce back-not only from a cf exacerbation, but also from pregnancy. My fertility issue was my cervical mucus, not nutrition.

I became pregnant with twins after IUI. My only identifiable fertility issue was the cervial mucus. My fertility specialist was concerned about multiple births since ovualtion was not a problem. We were counseled on embryo reduction-scary thought. My CF doctor was extremely supportive of me getting pregnant, however when I told her twins, the expression on her face was concern not joy.

I am blessed to have my little boy and my little girl. I had a difficult pregnancy and consider myself very fortunate to have delviered 2 healthy babies and that my lungs recovered back to my baseline. However, if i was older or not as healthy when i conceived, i do not think me or my babies would have been as fortunate.

This probably goes without saying, but it is very important you and your husband both feel comfortable seeking fertility treatment. It does add stress to the TCC process-much more so than charting and ovulating kits.

Whatever lies ahead of you, when the time is right you will become a mom to be.

Thank you so much for all your replies. I decided to go ahead and schedule a consult - I agree that we can at least get his opinion on things. Amazingly, they were able to get me in next week!
