Hey Kate....I know what you mean COMPLETELY! I used to have to thin out my hair at the hairdressers because it was sooooo thick...now my hair is so thin and depressing. Like I don't have problems with dry skin and stuff so for me it isnt a thyroid problem i dont think. However, I've been told certain meds can cause your hair to thin....enzymnes, prednisone, and urso maybe? Maybe my parents just told me that when i was growing up to help me feel better but since then that is what i suspect is the cause. Also stress may be a contributing factor?? Good luck..im feeling your pain ...especailly b/c we are both young!!

Stress had been known to be related to hair-loss. Not sure about depression, but I wouldn't rule it out.

you may be less likely to lose your hair than us guys, but no doubt, having little body could be a concern. Has anyone made any suggestions with changing shampoos?

My wife had made an interesting statement that a person does not really need that much shampoo for their hair, and that it would also cause thinning of the hair. I would suggest trying to cut down on the amount of shampoo you use, just as a way to reduce an extra factor in hair-loss. Perhaps, even decreasing the amount of times you shampoo, to see if any changes are made?

Good luck with the results.

Fred (who also has fine hair and a thin-mop!)

Hey Kate,

I actually have noticed the same thing with my hair over the past few months and to be honest I haven't really pinpointed what the problem is/was. I started to take some supplements and a vitamin B complex and I have noticed that the hair loss is not as dramatic, but it is still more than I am used too or have experienced in the past.

I will add that I also have dry skin - though I am not tired all the time. I have my bloodwork done every few months and actually just had it checked a few weeks ago and everything was fine - no thyroid issues.

My suggestion(s)

Ask you doc - maybe they can do bloodwork to check your vitamin levels. It may be as simple as a vitamin deficiency or something.

Have you changed shampoos? Changed hair products - meaning like hair dye (if you dye your hair)?

Are you experiencing alot of stress? Have you been having anxiety attacks? Are you experiencing depression? Those can definitely cause hair loss. When I asked the same question a few months ago I got that response and it is true because I have been extremely stressed and experiencing anxiety attacks frequently and all.

It may be a combination of things that is causing a problem not just one thing in particular. I would fiddle around with things and see if anything seems to help. I would also say that if you are experiencing any anxiety or depression that you maybe try to make an appointment to talk with a counselor or something. It is sometimes enough to just talk about the problems you are experiencing - maybe that would cut your stress/anxiety/depression and make you feel better.

Also how have your sugars been doing? I know that can cause the tiredness and I think diabetics are even prone to having drier skin.

Hope things start to get better and you figure out what is going on.

kate, i have an under-active thyroid . i was dx 12 yrs ago and i have been taking thyroxine for all that time. my symtoms were
feeling cold (always)
slight weight gain
depression
sleeping like a cat ( 20 hrs a day. literally!!!!!!!!)
my brain slowed right down ( some would say they didn't notice!!!!!!!)

the dr warned me about depression as a side effect but never explained why that might be. i take 150 mcg a day ( thats a lot!) but iv'e never been as a was before i was dx. i tire easily and can be moody and do get depressed all of which could easily be related to hypothyroidism or just as likely the worry about joe and cf. i hope you get everything sorted out . take care, janet <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
