I got one a couple of years ago & can count on one hand the times I've used it. My FEV1 was in the 30s. I had it forever and the first time I had the nerve to use it, some guy parked next to me said "That's bull*hit, you're not handicapped" to which I replied "Come spend a day in my shoes, buddy" he got in his car & left, darn it...I was ready to let him have it! lol

I'm sure there are many times when CFs get "the look" when using them because we aren't in a wheelchair, limping or have a pained look on our face when we walk, but oh well. If they just looked closer they could sure see us puffing, though<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

I use mine with no fear or shame, who cares what people think. I get dirty looks from little old ladies and gents all the time. My reply to them is one word, "Jealous?" Pisses them off so much! Another line I use - "I applaud you for being able to judge me so well based only on my looks...Looking at you, I'm gonna go with "a$$hole". Am I right?" I only use that one for the verbally abusive ones, though. I understand when people have concerns and if they approach me politely I am more than happy to explain to them my situation and we part ways smiling.

S, I love you second line you use. I think Im gonna have to try that.

I got my handicap sign when my FEV was around the low 40s. It definitely helps especially in the cold weather! I have only had someone make a comment once, it was an old guy at the store and he asked me if that was really mine. I was fired up inside and I told him "Yes, I had a lung disease!" Hes lucky I didnt go off on how crappy living with CF is.

If you need it, get one and dont feel bad for using it.

Get it, use it, and try not to feel self conscious about it! You are absolutely entitled to it! Anyone who comments is a person who is judgemental..and judgemental people are not happy people. Take care!
