Has anyone forgone a cf center for a pulmonologist?

I see a pulmonologist. When I had to make the transition to adult care, I did not like the Cf care center at Tampa General Hospital. The dr is a little too comedic, and the clinic itself was held in a hospital hallway. They did not make everyone wear masks (I always did) and I was iffy about touching the blood pressure cuff, pulse ox, etc. Plus, the dr is also the transplant doctor so everyone was pressuring me to get evaluated when I felt I was not ready and I already had a transplant doctor. My pulmonologist is great, he sees I think 8 other CF patients and gave me his cell number the first day I met him. Overall I have been very happy not being at the Cf clinic.

One thing I think is awesome about my CF doc is that he always calls back--a nurse never does. He even calls back in the middle of the night. He works 7 days a week. When I am in the hospital he comes to see me every day without fail. I am really dreading when he retires. I can't believe there are CF clinics out there that say there patients are too old to attend. I guess since there is only 1 CF doc/CF clinic in all Alaska, that is not going to happen any time soon. My doc still has me undergo hospitalizations in the Peds Ward. I love it, because the nurses are much more attentive, know a lot more about treating CF and there are a lot more perks--like internet, DVD players, etc. I agree with the point about the drug trials. I like to get the newest treatments.

I hope You are able to find a good Cf Doc before Yours retires.
Thats what happen to me, Mine Retired. The Pulm Doc I see now is ok.
But, Not near as Good as My Old Cf Doc. I saw Him everyday when I was in the
Hospital, and not just a quick in and out, Like the Docs now a days are.
I think Mine and a lot of Others have turned their office into something
like and assembly line.
I guess My Old Doc ( He turns 100 soon ) spoiled me.
When I would go see Him at Georgetown, He would stay with me
to X Rays then Pfts , everything. He never took his eyes off of me.
But He acted Fast when I needed something. He saved My Life twice
back in the 80's. It is kind of hard Not to Like a Guy who Saves Your Life.

Good Luck Jeana

I would go to a hospital that is not apart of a university just because I personally do NOT like people learning on me. I dont care if they "need the experience" they can do it on someone else. When my health is at stake they can do it else where.

Just remember that the doc you love so much was once a poking and prodding med student. I've seen a lot of great residents over the years and some of them are really willing to learn, from you, about how CF affects you. We were discussing CFRD over on another thread, the last time i saw my endocrinologist for insulin resistance secondary to steroids there was a student there. She was genuinely interested in CF and how it affected the endocrine/exocrine functions.

I realize that a choice like that is personal, but if everyone had that attitude we'd never have any new doctors and the new ones we do have will never become good doctors if nobody will trust them.
