has anyone given their kids mineral oil?

My 8-yr-old daughter saw the gastroenterologist last week and despite my best efforts, she still isn't gaining. She only put on about five ounces in six weeks and still hovers around 12.8 BMI.

I gave her Miralax everyday over those six weeks and she'd have a bowel movement twice a day, but she said it always hurt. She's described the pain as being both her bottom and her abdomen (she circles her stomach and side when pointing it out.) So the doctor feels that she still isn't clearing out her system adequately, which may be affecting her appetite.

He would like her to add mineral oil to her diet, but I have no idea how to do that. Do kids just swallow it? Do I mix it with something? (The doctor said some of his patients add it to orange juice and such, but it doesn't mix at all.) Any suggestions on how to get her to take it?

Also, the doctor said his collegues don't use it because it tends to leak out and stain clothes. I don't care about stains too much -- but she's already getting bullied in school as is, I can't imagine what will happen with stains on her backside. Any tips on perserving her dignity while we clean her out?!?!?

Thanks so much!

I have a lot of problems with my GI system and getting blocked. I have used mineral oil, in a thing called a chocolate bomb. I'll get the recipe for it from my mom. Before I use it though I would talk to your daughters GI doctor.

I don't know about mineral oil, but have you tried organic coconut oil? It helped my daughter enormously when it come to weight gain.

My son has never used mineral oil, he is on a daily dose of Miralax and we just double the dose when he needs to get fully cleaned out.<P>We use an additive called MCT-Procal in his nighttime feeds to increase his calories (he has a g-tube), but since it's a powder it can be mixed with just about any food. MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) are absorbed into the body differently than other foods or as Wikipedia says "MCTs passively diffuse from the GI tract to the portal system (longer fatty acids are absorbed into the lymphatic system) without requirement for modification like long-chain fatty acids or very-long-chain fatty acids do. In addition, MCTs do not require bile salts for digestion. Patients that have malnutrition or malabsorption syndromes are treated with MCTs because they do not require energy for absorption, utilization, or storage."<P>Here's their website if anyone wants to discuss it with their GI or Nutritionist and they do offer free samples. It is rather expensive if you have to pay for it yourself - I think it was roughly $60.00 for 24 packets, but our insurance covers it.<P><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://vitaflousa.com/products.aspx?cmd=viewproductdetail&id=43&catid=16">LINK TO MCT-PROCAL</a>
