Have you had this?

Hey all

I am on day 11 of IV's (tobra ceftaz) and I actually caught a head cold 4 days into them which slowed my progress. At 7 days in my PFT's had increased 5% but I have about another 10% to go to get back to what I was in feb. My 'snottiness' is startingt to decrease but my cough/mucous in lungs is really weird. Normally by this far in I am pretty dried out and non-productive, I have never had this, I am not sure if its good or bad.

When I huff or cough the stuff is slowly slowly coming up, I can cough to the point of making myself sick and all I get out is a little bit, light yellow, perhaps sometimes thicker small green areas (like peas). I am not sure if this is from the cold or being more vigilent with therapies (where I would normally be nonproductive now). I try and try to get it all out but its just 'stuck' what should I do?

My routine has included:
vest 120minutes a day (minimum) via 3-4times a day
xopenex or albuterol with all my treatments
2pulmozyme 1x day (this is my norm)
TOBI 2x day (this just started 4/1 before that is was 3HTS)
7% HTS 1x day
walk or workout every day 45-70 minutes

Any help is greatly appreciated

Ummm, let's see...First thing, do you do Albuterol, or Xopenex, etc.? I would ask for that (if you can tolerate it) first. It will help to get your airways opened up and make it easier to get stuff up, and the meds (like HS and Pulmozyme) deeper into your lungs.

Do you do your pulmozyme and HS at the same time? If so, I would suggest doing your pulmozyme first thing in the a.m., and then doing your HS at night or a few hours after the Pulmozyme, to give the Pulmozyme some time to work.

I imagine that the unusual gunkiness is probably from your cold, and maybe even getting some of the old stuff out- which would be good.

Have you told your doctor what is going on? You also may need to have another sputum culture done, to make sure that nothing has changed with your cold and possibly have a switch up in your meds, and/or (I hate to say this) be on IVs a little longer, since you had the cold and are still coughing up colored gunk like you described, and you aren't happy with where your pfts are at this point.

Also, I switched to doing one 7% HS, and one 3% HS, because the 7% is too strong for me in the evenings, especially when I'm sick. Can you add another HS before you go to bed? Maybe the 7% in the morning, Pulmozyme in the afternoon, and a 3% at night? Just brainstorming .

I hope you are feeling better really soon, and that stuff is "old gunk" and you will blow the roof off your pfts next time .

I get this a lot... I seem to be completely better then I start coughing up little plugs of gooey junk. It's basically the texture of condensed soup - if you can imagine a little pea sized glob of it. Maybe a bit stickier but you get the idea. I think this happens when you clear out all the "easy" stuff, then as you continue to do your meds, they have nothing else to "work" on except the really nasty stuff. So it takes a while, but you can eventually get it out.

I would try HS twice a day, and just be patient and vigilant in your treatments, it will come up eventually.

Hope you are feeling better!

Edit: I like analogies so here's another. It's like when you don't wash off your dishes immediately. When you pick one up and try to rinse it, some stuff comes off immediately and washes away, some stuff you need to scrub a while, and some stuff is so stuck there you need to let it soak. Right now you are probably in the scrub/soak stage, so keep at it!

thanks to both of you

I do have xopenex and do that or puffs of albuterol each time and I forgot to mention that.

I dont have much problems with the 7%HTS at all. I was doing xopenex pulmozyme once a day and then the xopenex and HTS the other 2-3 times but now that I am on TOBI I can only get in HTS once a day, unless I guess I added it before one of the TOBI's. Is that a good idea?

Additionally the reason I dont think this is old stuff is because it is very light yellow 95+% of the time. Though I hope you are right sevenstars and it is!

thanks for all the input so far

AND-If I am not 100% on tuesday I will stay on them longer for sure, no since in letting it come back sooner than later.
