HEARING LOSS

Yes I know just another thing, but I figured I worked the pain issue too much so need new material.

My left ear has been giving me problems, but didnt think much of it until this morning. Now both ears are bad. The right ear is more like when you have wax or something that needs to move or like when you ear needs to pop.

They both "sound" muffled. I was curious as to those who have lost their hearing whether it be from Tobra or something else how yours started as?

I assume that with hearing loss I wouldnt hear even the "Muffled" sound (which is quite annoying when I hear my muffled breathing if that makes sense). Maybe its just sinuses draining etc, but I will address yet another issue with my doctor.

I am sure I need another hearing test &/or appt with an ENT to be sure.

First thing I thought of was "I CANT TALK ON THE PHONE" which actually has been difficult especially with soft spoken people.....sighs!

ON A GOOD NOTE.....I didnt take any percocet or tylenol last night. I woke up with a bit of pain. Had a good cough, a bit of vomit & my chest feels great!

HURRAY!

my ears always do that now-its permanent damage. they sound/feel like they are clogged with wax or something but they really aren't. thats just how they are. they ring alot too. its just too many years of tobi/tobra.
if this is new to you-i'd urge you to tell dr w bc she always tells me to tell her right away if anything is different about my ears. it just means they have to lower the dosage. you dont want permanent damage. and it sneaks up on your very quickly.

Oh Mel I'm afraid that's what it 'sounds' like (no pun intended!)

I have hearing loss from years and years of meds - esp antibiotics (a lot of them are otoxic, meaning they damage the nerve cells in your ears which is irreversable) That type of hearing loss is called sensoneurial and cannot be changed.

One sign if my hearing has gotten worse (which hasn't been in years thank goodness) is the muffledness - esp on the phone when you can't see people's faces to read their lips or view their facial expressions to pick up on any clues. I DO have hearing aids for this, i don't always wear them tho b/c I can manage w/o them. But in social settings I tend to wear them as it helps out.

Usually with this type of loss, it's high pitched and low pitched frequencies. When you're on so many antibiotics at length, it's pretty inevitable that hearing loss will happen. If you have any questions, just ask.

Also to note, that you can't 'stop' hearing loss just you can a cold. So if you DO go to an audiologist, getting hearing aids or getting it tested won't stop it from getting worse. Some people tend to think that getting it looked into can prevent or slow it's progress. It sucks but you can't. You do however, get used to it!

Good luck!

Yo Mel.
Hearing loss is lame! I have been going through it for years. I think it started when I was on the TOBI study when I was in my teens. Also I have had like 15+ sets of ear tubes because of fluid in there. Sometimes the tubes leave an ear drum perforation and that really causes loss...that happened to me 3 years ago and we fixed it by using a skin graft to make a new ear drum. My hearing still isn't that great in that ear.

I think it's a combination of ear tube, ear sugeries, antibiotics and rock and roll..I have worn hearing aids for a cool two years now. For me it's hard to hear low frequencies and especially people who are talking in a noisy situate. It's never really muffled for me but just hard to understand people. Lip reading is becoming a specialty of mine.

I hope you get this worked out and get into that ENT!!
