HELP - Denied State Health Aid

Basically we were told that here in Hawaii,in order to qualify for assistance, we have to terminate the boys coverage under my husband.

This is how I understand the insurance system...please clarify if you can...maybe with websites if you have them???

When we get to the point of being able to "afford" the bills on our own and no longer need state aid, an insurance company will see that the boys were uninsured and can deny coverage for them, as they have a pre-existing condition.

At this point, I don't know if we have any other options, but I fear we may be making things worse in the future, than they are right now....if that makes sense.

Any responses are so much appreciated!!!

blessings,
missa

Well, if you are going through a group insurance plan at your husbands work, they won't be able to deny for preexisting conditions later on. However, this seems odd to me -- wouldn't state aid rather act as the supplemental insurance than the primary one? It costs them much less.

You might go to Julie's website where they help people figure this out.... www.dafcf.org

There are a couple important things to keep in mind. Part of why HIPAA was enacted was to eliminate insurers from being able to permanently be able to deny coverage to people due to the pre-existing condition thing. Secondly, the temporary denial they are legally allowed to impose will be reduced (perhaps even eliminated) when you are able to show them proof of 'credible coverage'. State programs (i.e. Medicaid programs) do count as credible coverage- your boys will are not considered to be 'uninsured' while under the care of a state program.

Information about this

I would look further into the possibility of whether you can find a program that can act as supplementary insurance, though. I know in our state, you can have both, with one covering whatever the other does not.

Thanks for the info!!! I know it is really weird that they wouldn't cover the boys with health insurance. it would definitely save the state a lot of money if that were the case!!!
I think my next step is to find a social worker and see if they have any additional info. It is so hard to be in a new place and not know who to talk to to get the info I need. I am so afraid to make the wrong decision!!!!
