I second the suggestion about avocados. I make sandwiches using 2 pieces multigrain bread, 1 slice cheese, mayo, red onion and one whole avocado. Tastes great when the bread is toasted/cheese is melted first. Adding in some hummus, turkey or chicken tastes great too, or even doing this with a hamburger. YUM.

ok, well i didn't have a very good appointment yesterday. needless to say i'm taking care of morgan and not me. i haven't been doing my breathing treatments right and my pft's are the lowest they've ever been and also i'm at 104 lbs where as i used to weigh 116.

i got a picc line and my doctor put me on oral cipro and batrim. and i'm taking the azactam through the iv. the pharmacist said that they were ok to breastfeed with, but morgans pediatrition said that they aren't. whose advice should i take?

they are OK to breastfeed with! Don't trust any doctor till you have someone look it up in Dr. Hale's "Medications and Mother's Milk" book. I'll look them up for you right now on his forum:

I know that Cipro is safe (even the AAP says so) and he says Bactrim is safe. I can't find what he says on aztreonam so someone else w/ the book will have to look it up for you. Here's what I would do in your shoes: I would not accept any medication that isn't safe for breastfeeding. There are so many other options out there and most of them are safe. You said she doesn't take a bottle well and your breastmilk is much better for her than formula. You just need to start taking care of yourself! Call your doctor back and ask for another med safe w/ breastfeeding if the azactam isn't.

Oh I found a reference for you on azactam : "Aztreonam (Azactam). There is no evidence that this [beta]-lactam, rated B, is teratogenic or embryo-fetotoxic in animals. But there are no reports in human pregnancy, so I recommend avoiding it in the first trimester until such data are available. Because of low concentrations in breast milk, exposure is probably not a risk to the nursing infant."

Additionally I'd get some probiotic liquid or powder to give Morgan so she doesn't get thrush and you also need to be taking probiotics to prevent thrush and yeast infections in yourself.

my docs were so conservative about me taking meds and breastfeeding-it caused so much frustration bc i'd go to my lactation consultants and they'd say things were totally fine.
finally i persuaded my docs to talk to the lactation nurses and now the docs contact them about everything. lactation nurses have so much more info about drugs-they have4 actual studies on them, and my doc said that she just doesnt have studies to go by to know whats safe.
lactaction centers use dr hales book. he's the authority. and my babys pediatrician uses dr hales book also. go by dr hale.

also remember that though a drug may be strong, consider how long you are using it. theres a big difference between using an iv med for several weeks and using a drug long term that is going to build up in your milk and babys bloodstream. most iv drugs are safe.
