Help with vest info and experience

Hi,

A close friend of mine has a six year old daughter with CF. I have offered to head up a fundraiser to raise the funds to purchase a vest. (We are not covered in Canada so we have to come up with 100% of the cash ourselves).

At her last major clinic (3 mths ago) they suggested that she would benefit from getting a vest, so we got the ball rolling on the fundraising ideas. Yesterday at the clinic they said that not only is the vest not more effective then manual therapy, but the vest may actually not be as effective as manual therapy. They weren't discouraging her from getting it but mentioned that it may not help.

So, I offered to do some research. To see what others with CF are using, if they have had good results, what vest they have purchased, do some prefer a different method. I saw the Electro Flo 5000. Is that better then a vest (I know the site says it is, but I prefer to hear from people who aren't affiliated and have an unbiased opintion). I would love to hear what you think, what your experience has been.

Right now, after yesterdays clinic she is up to doing the therapy (pounding, sorry i don't know the technical term) three times a day.

What are your thoughts? Have you found the vest (or other equiptment)just as productive? What are the benefits of the vest for you? If I am doing the fundraising I would like to have some facts. We don't want to go to all this work, raise $16,500 and find out that it wasn't worth it. Not when other peoples money and sweat are involved. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I hope to hear from some of you. Your thoughts and experience and knowledge would be much appreciated.

During our last clinic visit, the respiratory therapist said that manual chest percussion IS better than the vest. However, I believe that the vest can compliment it. In my case, my son is 14 months old and it was becoming very difficult (actually impossible) to do it manually because he refused to sit still. In order to get 2 sessions in per day, I use the vest (Smart Vest) in the morning & I do manual pt in the evening when I put him to bed. It would also be beneficial for an older cf'er who doesn't have someone to perform their therapy on a daily basis. In my limited experience, it does seem like manual pt works better because you can really concentrate on the different lobes &&&&& a machine can't detect if an area needs a little more work than another, etc... The daily treatment of someone with cf can take it's toll, so I am happy to have a little help. I'm really looking forward to hearing what others have to say.

I sent you a p.m. -- there have been studies regarding high frequency percussions using the vest being better than CPT.

One of our CF doctors is of the same mindset; however, he prescribed the vest from Hill-Rom for our son when he was 3. We'd started struggling with CPT treatments and when one of us was out of town, they took twice as long as it did when DH and I worked together.

Also, I don't know if the percussor is covered under their insurance -- if I recall correctly it was orginally developed/manufactured in Canada, but the price seemed to be about as much as a vest.

My daughter is almost 6 and has the VEST since she was 2 1/2 years old. The VEST is worth it. We did manual CPT for the first 2 1/2 years. Having the VEST gives my daughter more control; she can sit while haveing her VEST, she can watch TV or play on the computer, she can listen to books, she can even play a game of cards while doing the VEST. I feel the VEST is more effective than me doing CPT to her because, my wrists would get tired my arms and the VEST hits her all at the same time. I still do manual CPT if she is sick if I want to get to specific areas in her lungs/ and if she is sick at night. SOmething comforting about CPT in the dark in bed. We have the HIll-rom 104. If our health insurance hadn't covered it I would find a way to get one. HTH
