Hemoptysis

Anyone have some rules to live by for a hemoptysis situation? I coughed up about 3 or 4 tablespoons of blood today and immediately took 2 vitamin K. In the past I was told by my center to stop pulmozyme and hypertonic saline, but for how long I don't remember. Should I also stop Colistin/Tobi or CPT/Vest? What about the following day assuming no more hemoptysis?

I'll call my doc on Monday, I think I need to be admitted. I have been coughing no-stop morning till 1 or 2 and then I'm beat. But for now I'd appreciate any advice

Hello,
So sorry your dealing with this right now. My 9 yearold daughter with CF started coughing up blood Thursday for the first time ever. Her doc said stop Pulmozyme and hypertonic and add one back 24 hours later and the next 24 hours after that as long as there is no blood. They said it happens and sometimes with increased treatments the Pulmozyme and hypertonic become harsh on the lining of the lungs. I was also told if it increases from about the 2 table spoons it was to more than a 1/2 a cup to take her to the ER. She on her off cycle from tobi so I dont know about that. But they did say continue albuterol and Qvar and Vest. And during vest nebulize normal saline. Hope this helps. When in doubt I would hit the ER..

Here are some *unproven* tips that have helped myself & others in the past. (in addition to holding off on HS & Pulmo for whatever amt of time your Dr suggests)

Don't lay flat at night, sleep propped up
Don't bend down from waist, but rather squat if you need to pick something up or get something from a lower cabinet
Stay away from harsh smells (i.e. bleach, Tilex, paint, etc)

Hope it gets better, it's no fun to have hemoptysis<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
