Hernia?

I think I developed a hernia when I moved house last week. I have a spongy bump about the size of a 10c piece which is a few inches below my sternum. It doesn't hurt or anything, but seems to pop out when I cough or sneeze - I can't stop myself from pushing it back in...

Has anyone else had one of these? I called my Dr and he said it might not be a CF thing. They didn't seem to think it was too big a deal because there was no pain.

I am keeping an eye on it, but worried that the extra coughing might be a problem and make it worse. If you have had a hernia did you get it repaired straight away? If not were you given any advice about lifting, coughing or exercise?

Thanks

AJ

My understanding is that people with CF are at increased risk for hernias. Hernias aren't necessarily something you need to deal with urgently. If it's "incarcerated" or "strangulated" -- ie has a loop of intestine caught in it -- then it's serious and needs immediate attention. It's common for people to put off dealing with hernias because many of them aren't urgent problems.

Definitely get it checked out.

I had an inguinal hernia from lugging around my old school vest for years <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have 3 kids, 2 with CF. The 2 with CF have the same herina your are talking about. Both were born with them. All docs (CF and Ped) say to leave it alone unless it causes them pain. I have always wondered if there was a relationship between their Cf and the herinas. Any thoughts?
