High FEV1? Might not be the whole story

This was a very interesting article. Thank you for sharing it.

My son has an interesting turn about to this scenario. His FEV1 is hovering in the mid to low 30's. However, upon listening to him, he sounds clear, his X ray and CT shows that his lungs are actually better than they were prior to the PICU admission and the vent. And his RR is down comparatively to the previous admission as well.

He has also started to gain weight which indicates that his lungs arent working as hard to breathe, because every time he was sick he would have a terrible time keeping the weight on.

In addition we are having a terrible time trying to get Pulse Ox readings on him. his circulation seems to be non existent in his extremities. And even when they try to get a blood pressure they have to try and try again.

My husband has been reading some articles about the effects of Asthma on lungs when triggered by allergens and accompanied by severe allergies. My son also has Asthma in addition to his CF and severe allergies.

Have you found any articles that would explain his situation regarding his FEV1? Just curious.

No articles but I can tell you that my FEV1 would probably be 20 or 30 points lower if I didn't treat my allergies.

Getting skin tested (not blood IgE tested) and subsequently taking an anti-histamine, an intranasal steroid, puting dust mite covers on my pillows and bed, and adding two HEPA filters to my house have made my lungs function so much better.

Allergies are immensely under treated in CF sadly

See if they can take his O2 reading from his nose or his ear. There are Sensor adaptors that can be exchanged with finger sensors on a Pulse Ox machine for these areas.

This is really interesting. Over the past years mine have stayed around 88% at my sickest gone doen to 77% and at my best in feb at 97%, but it makes me wonder alot. If Im doing good does that mean that Im just going to go down hill fast? I have lung damage it is show in my catscans. I have noticed that over the past 2 years since I added the allgery covers to the bed and the hepa filters throut the house my number have been better, so I credit alot to that.
