High glucose level

A week ago my DD had her blood work done after having VHC Carnation and the cf center just called saying that her glucose levels were high (192) We were told the normal range is 65-100.

Is it possible that the high sugar content of carnation caused this result. CF Center want to run a Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. The test takes 4 hours and I hate to think she could have diabetes. Her vitamin A was low. Any advice please.

It would be pretty unusual for a four year old to have cfrd I think. it's usually associated with older cfers. I dont understand your BGL measurements, because ours are measured differently, with the normal range being 4 - 6.

having said that, the result does sound very high. I'm also not sure what the Carnation reference is about (sorry, from another country), sounds like some food that's high in sugar? That could raise the BGL.

The fasting glucose test will give you a more accurate result...I appreciate how scary this is for you. My son ended up having Type 1 diabetes after I noticed diabetes type symptoms (drinking a lot, urinating a lot...does your daughter have any of those symptoms?). the type 1 is a completely separate disorder to the cf, is not cf related diabetes.

Please let us know the outcomes of the test, i truelly hope that it was just the carnation...is there any diabetes or lupus, thyroid disorders in your family? Auto immune...there wasnt any in ours anyhow, but if there is any in yours it might be related. Try not to be too concerned until you've done the fasting glucose test <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

To get an accurate blood glucose level...it needs to be done at least 2 hours after eating or drinking anything. I know the VHC Carnation has a high sugar content and would definitely make blood sugar levels rise. It can't hurt to do an oral glucose tolerance test...but if the blood work was done soon after drinking the VHC...I wouldn't be too worried.
Good Luck!

I don't have an answer, but I would think that it would affect it since they are so high in sugar. My 7 yr old DS CFer is having to have the 2 hour glucose test on Monday. I am scared to death. Let me know what you find out.
