Socialization is not nearly as hard as people imply it is. My kids all do scouting. Yes, its other children, but much smaller numbers. The boys scouting groups are only about 5-8 kids per group. Our Girl Scout troop is bigger but only around 20 girls.

My 12 year old plays soccer competitively. My 9 year old daughter takes ballet and jazz weekly.

They attend church and Sunday School. And, we have other homeschooled friends who the kids get together with and play together with.

None of my kids are lacking in socialization, except my CFer who came home 5 months ago He's been public schooled to this point. But, he's been in a self contained special ed classroom, so he still has little idea how to interact with anyone. He can't interact with other children nor adults because he was never taught that in school.

I homeschooled my two sons for 8 years (or so). We pulled them out in part because my son wcf was not yet diagnosed and was missing so much school. Homeschooling him helped him get healthier. He could eat whenever he needed to, whatever he needed to and could rest as needed, etc. The routine (weekly) fevers gradually stopped and he gradually got stronger.

You should check out the laws for your state to see what you will need to comply with: Homeschool Legal Defense/State laws
And you can join an email list (or a few) for support. They can be great. I have heard of people homeschooling all kinds of different ways and some homeschool families have much more of a social life than folks in school because they have more time and freedom for it. I have a little info about our homeschooling experience on one of my websites: Kids Like Mine

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Home schooling is a difficult choice for certain. Our child 11, with CF and diabetes is VERY social in school, those seem to be the important thread for his self esteem. sam missed 9 weekds in 4th grade due to hospitalization and it was emotionally depressing for him. Sure friends called and a couple vistied, but our hospital is 1 1/2 hours away and that makes it difficult. Our child does not engage in sport other than skateboarding, so the team connection is not there for him. I too consider homeschooling, but I do not hink I am qualified, nor do I think it is the best decisin for our cfer. Truly a difficult decision, a doctor suggested we consider this option, did yours? what does your child say about this. I am REALLy concerned for middle school next year that begins at 7:30 am. That makes hypertonic saline, pulmozyme, toby and vest all done before school a very difficult task. any suggestions?

Hello,
Took Katlynn back to her cf doc. today. Did not have to do the hospital thing again. All is ok...her blow test was better than last time..weight is better...cause the steriods. But he thought homebound schooling was very reasonable for her.So gotta make arrangements with the school. We will see how it plays out. Trying to find something she might be interested in as a sport or activity. She seems to be ok with the homebound thing. She doesn't care too much for school this year. Did not get in the same class as her buddy..Colton. He is her best friend from last year. She said she was fine with the homebound if he could still come to the house to see her.

And the whole morning med's ....it takes her about an hour to do them.Albuterol/Pulmozyme/Vest 20 mins./symbicort(inhaler)and then Tobi. That's just in the morning..night is about the same...only hypertonic instead of pulmozyme...

In the hospital the last time they did the vest after the first 2 neb's ...is there an easier way..that might be faster.Any suggestions?
Nora,
Mom of Katlynn 9w/cf
And Shayla 19w/teenage attitude!!
