Horseback riding and CF

I grew up with horses but after developing horrible allergies around age 20 (to horses, hay, dust, well almost EVERYTHING) I cannot stand to be around them. I literally suffer. So yes until then, it was great to ride and just be around horses.

It does help me to be out in the open air with them, being in a barn is like instant allergy & asthma attacks. And the horses themselves make me itch. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

So sad because my mom has a huge equine facility and boards about 25 horses and owns a few also. I know at her place you can help out at the barn (cleaning stalls, feeding, watering, etc) to lessen the board & lesson fees. In your daughters case, I don't think that would be best. But that is just from my own experience!

Enjoy!!

I see everyone here seems to be in agreement. Horseback riding is great. Anna loves horses and took lessons when she was in elementary school, went to horsemanship camp in Girl Scouts and LOVED it all. She rode western then and wouldn't give English as second look. She took it up again the the months before transplant but this time took English at the advice of the instructor. Why? Because you use more leg muscle and that is what she needed pre-TX. We are certain that is what lead to her great success in getting up and walking around on her own right after TX. She finally had some leg muscles. IT is great exercise!

I say go for it. As long as your ready for your daughter to develop a life long love of horses and start concoting ways to get you to buy her one. We are still trying to convince Anna that we are not going to put a horse in our backyard!

Buy your daughter her own helmet, don't use a school's helmet. Just like a hairbrush, you don't know who's head it's been on. No sneakers either, she's gotta have boots. She's gonna love it.

Good luck!

Both of my daughters just started taking riding lessons. I grew up around them and loved to ride and I just get so tickled watching Kayla and Hannah.

Blake-I loved your video of you and your horse Nicki! Thanks for sharing!

I love it! I used to do it from the age of 6 when i got lessons for my birthday and did it till i was about 15 i think.
Riding did me good, it was great physio. I had lessons (didn't have my own horse) and didn't go into the stables that much.
