How do you know it is time for a vest?

Based on something Hillary said, I am curios what others think. My son--14 years old and only recently diagnosed--does not use a vest. Our instructions were to do CPT when he has a cold. His recent PFT was 80%. They have been pretty consistently in the high 70s, low 80s since we started doing them for his asthma in 2006. Any thoughts?

In my opinion, its time for your vest when your arms are aching from doing manual CPT.

I love the vest because it gives consistent all over CPT and I don't get a cramped wrist.

I don't think "time for the vest" is necessarily the phrase -- but it would be a blessing to have it.

do cpt only when he has a cold??? thats a little concerning that a doctor would recommend that. do you go to an accredited cf center? if not, i would find the closest one asap! daily cpt is one of the main preventative measures to help keep cf at bay. i think i would get another opinion...... good luck!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Airway clearance is something that should be done daily, and the vest is an extremely valuable tool in accomplishing this.

For kids, generally speaking, it's not a matter of waiting for declining health to get it but rather when they grow big enough for it, it is ordered and started.

Preventative care helps KEEP the airways clear, keep mucus from building up, and reduce illness/infection- and it's impossible to do that if it's only done when sick. Given he has clear resp involvement (asthma, pft's what they are), standard care for cf would be daily treatments, and increased treatments when ill. Being as proactive as possible will help boost his odds as much as possible for his future health... The vest might help increase odds of compliance there, since it allows for complete independence w/ treatments (especially valuable with that age.)

I wish the best and hope that he's able to get one.
