How long should a cold last?

I spoke to the CF nurse on Wednesday night. She said that it sounds like Emma is still getting over a cold or it could be allergies.

She said to watch for coughing that sounds like barking and coughing that wakes her from sleep. If I see either of these things then I am supposed to call back and they would watch to get her on something else. She is not doing either of these.

She is really only coughing when getting up from sleeping and sometimes when drinking her bottle.

Hopefully it will go away soon.

Do they know that she is coughing when getting up from sleeping and sometimes WHILE DRINKING her bottle?

Two things come to mind hearing that it is happening when drinking one being an allergy to the formula possibly and the other possible aspiration going on.

Next time you talk to them, if you haven't already, make sure to point out to them that it happens when she is drinking her bottle. I could be wrong but this could be a significant piece of info for them.

I hope she gets better soon or they get it figured out for you and can fix it if it needs fixing,

Thanks for the info. I will bring it up again when we see them on the 27th. We did talk extensively about her coughing when she wakes up. The nurse said she would expect that after a nap or sleeping all night.

Coughing when eating... this happens occassionally and it is usually after she has finished the bottle. Her nose was pretty plugged up so I wonder if maybe she was getting less air with the bottle in her mouth? Either way, I will mention it to the doctor.

BTW... she is MUCH better today. Not much coughing in the last 24 hours, so maybe she is getting over it finally.

My Ellie is going through the same thing right now. We were on bactrim for about a week and it wan't to effective. She then went on the antibiotic merrem and had a 2 week dose. About two days before she was finished she started a lot of coughing and sneezing. I thought it might be allergies or a cold. I called my pulmonolgist and he extended her antibiotics. She will be finished with this round on Wed. All of the coughing and sneezing is mucusy but it's clear. I put another call into the pulmonologist last night and we are doing Xopenex, then cpt, then another half of Xop. That seems to be helping. We do go back to the pulmonologist on Thurs. to check up on the coughing and sneezing. She sounds just awful right now. I'll let you know if he gives us any new ideas, but the extra treatments do seem to be working the best for us.
