How many time a year do you take antibiotics?

If I remember correctly he has mild CF and only has staph aureus? I only get treated for respiratory infections, I get nothing for overgrowths unless they cause fever and other symptoms. You can become resistant to antibiotics so mild CFers are sometimes kept off them as much as possible until the disease progresses.

Hypertonic saline is awesome, it really loosens the mucus up. I use a mask and it clears out my sinuses too. Great right before exercise.

Not sure if my response is correct for his symptoms but thought I'd respond.

Hi Bonniebaby!

Yes, he only grows s. aureus, and at least until last culture (a month ago) it´s sensitive to every antibiotic. I was just a little warry because he had two infections very close together ( a month 1/2 appart) and I was thinking if he could be taking something else. Maybe in our next visit we´ll ask about hypertonic saline.
Bonniebaby do you always take the same antibiotic for your s. aureus infection or do you take different ones to try to avoid resistence?. If I remember right u use antibiotic 2-3 times year?

I'm surprised if your boyfriend is not on zithromax (azithromycin). For cf'ers, its not really prescribed as an antibiotic, but instead an anit-inflammatory medication. It has been shown to reduce inflammation if taken every other day on a continual basis. As far as oral antibiotics go, most of our doctors try to avoid frequent oral abx when possible to avoid becoming resistant to them. I would think, but I'm not sure, that being on them 3 -4 times a year would not be a problem , but as far as the frequency goes, I'm not positive at what point a person starts building resistance. If he is getting infections and they are not getting totally wiped out, then it may be time that the docs start looking at something a little more aggressive.

As far as 4 flare ups a year, its not something that you should be overconcerned about. I don't know the severity of his flare ups, what someone considers a flare up varies greatly with us cf'ers. But in many cases, if he is only getting a cough a few times a year and is going the majority with no cough at all, he is doing very well. Most important is that he maintains his health regime, and doesn't let it get himself down.

I send out a handshake to you, it is very admirable for you to be involved like you are. It takes a strong person to take the initiative to help with the care of their significant other.

I was only diagnosed this year so the clinic has only given me 2 rounds of zithromax in Sept. I was pregnant so that did limit what I could take, not sure if something else would have been prescribed otherwise.

Normally I eat a lot of garlic, especially on days I feel low-energy. If he likes it just add it to his dinner. We buy a big container of the powdered garlic Costco sells right next to our stove and DH knows to add it when he cooks.

I also discovered something the night before last. I woke up with a sore throat in the middle of the night and I was worried so I nebbed hypertonic saline to soothe my throat. It did wonders and I woke up feeling fine. I have a little scratchiness but I'm amazed, I truly thought I was on my way to a bad infection.
