how often are you on I.V. abx?

Before I got really sick (like in high school) I was on IV abx about once every six months and then the frequency increased from there. Right before the Tx I would be on IV abx for 4 weeks, off for 2 and then sick again and go right back on. I think that my FEV1 was roughly in the high 20's at this point. About a month to 2 months before the Tx, I was on IV abx for two weeks, off for one, and then on again. This was on purpose to try to control the infections so that the transplant wouldn't be held off from being sick when the organs were offered. It worked! I did not have any active infections when I was offered the organs!

I had the transplants on January 31, 2007 and have not been on IV antibiotics a day since.

I have only done them 3x in my life. The last time was about 8 months ago. I probably could have used them earlier in life; but, was not at a CF center. I tend to stay within about 8% points with FEV1....kind of up and down without IVs. I'll leave my FEV1 to the imagination

Before i got cepacia, i didnt need iv's. Once i got cepacia i started getting iv's as needed every year or so then every 6 months. The problem with "as needed" is , i would wait till i was so sick i had to have them. This year has been my worst, Its Oct. and i have been on iv's 3 times already , with right now being the third time .... but this time it was elective to keep from getting to the point of needing them. In my opinion if you are healthy to where you dont get sick often, then dont do them till you actually need them. But once you get to a point where you are needing them more often than you would like , its best not to wait till you need them, and try to catch it before things get bad.... because by then you may be sacrificing more than you think.
