How Often Does One Get a Broncoscopy?

I agree with Heather...Bronchoscopies are a diagnostic tool. If there is infection that is not being cleared by treatments that you usually respond to, it may be necessary to get a better look inside the lungs and take a sample of sputum from deeper down inside the lungs. Just as sputum samples that are coughed up, bronchoscopies are not 100% conclusive, but do give doctors a better idea of what is going on.

My son has had two and he is 11 years old.

Both times were due to unexplained drop in FEV1. And both times found a significant increase in pseudomonas that was not showing up in sputum samples.

By age 4, Aidan had two bronchs. We are 115% compliant meaning we do more airway clearance and VEST time than our clinic asks of us. Once he had a month of unexplained coughing and they wanted to check for a fungus. Another time he cultured MRSA and they wanted to see if it was in the lungs as well. It was.

Absolutely you can require a bronch and still be 100% compliant. My reason for mentioning being 100% compliant was so that people would know that if I'd felt there was an ADVANTAGE to having a bronch myself then I would have had one. The situation has not arisen.

In the young (or the the very sick) they are used to clear mucus when the person is unable to and at all levels they are good for diagnosing whtat is going on in an unexplained FEV1 drop.

I had 1 bronch pre transplant and it was to clear a blockage and a ton of extra mucus that I could not get out on my own. It wasn't really to diagnose anything. I had a partially collapsed lung due to a plug that I could not get up myself so the bronch was done.

Since my transplant I have had a ton of them because they were regularly scheduled post transplant for the first 2 years. Now I will not have one unless a problem arises and they need to do a biopsy.
