I agree with Heather...Bronchoscopies are a diagnostic tool. If there is infection that is not being cleared by treatments that you usually respond to, it may be necessary to get a better look inside the lungs and take a sample of sputum from deeper down inside the lungs. Just as sputum samples that are coughed up, bronchoscopies are not 100% conclusive, but do give doctors a better idea of what is going on.
My son has had two and he is 11 years old.
Both times were due to unexplained drop in FEV1. And both times found a significant increase in pseudomonas that was not showing up in sputum samples.
