HTS neb

We began Mason on HTS-7% 4 mL w/ the neb about 5 weeks ago. The first
couple weeks it would take about 5-7 minutes to finish. But, last few
weeks it has taken up to 15 minutes for the solution to run through.
Until we received the Avent Baby Bottle Sterilizer a couple weeks ago,
we would wash the neb cup/parts in hot, soapy water & then boil for
at least 5 minutes every night. Now, we still wash in hot, soapy water
& then run through the sterilizer after every use at night. We took
the compressor & parts to the home health store where we purchased
to see if all was okay, and they checked out, but gave us a new neb cup
set just in case. The first use it only took about 7 minutes, but the
second use it was back to 15 minutes!!?? Has anyone else experienced
this? How long should it normally take to run the solution.<br>

Mason is only 7 months, and his patience really runs out when it takes that long!<br>

What type of compressor do you have? When My daughter first started HTS we had a Pari Proneb and the treatment took 15 minutes; the Pari compressor can not keep up with all my daughter's nebs. It just burns out and the time increased.

We now have a Invacare Mobilaire compressor and it works so much better. HTS takes 10 minutes on that. 5-7 minutes for HTS seems awful fast.

HST takes us a good 20 mins to do and I thought that 15 - 20 was the norm. We also have a Pari compressor

My daughter had the same experience as Mason. Hypertonic saline 7% was the first medicine we used in out new Pari compressor and neb cup. It took less than 10 minutes at first and then began to take 15 minutes. We were also washing and then sterilizing by boiling. Then we got the baby bottle sterilizer and as long as we use bottled water and not tap water in the sterilizer the next tx seems shorter back to 10-12 minutes. I think it is hard to get the salt off the nebs. I now bought a 6 pack of nebs so I have the option of carefully looking at the neb for any white film (I assume salt) and then rewashing and sterilizing.
I also found that my daughter's treatment times depend on how deep a breath she is taking. If she is really into a book or TV show she seems to take smaller/shallower breathes and the whole tx takes longer. If she is just flipping through a magazine or sit with her and remind her to take deep breathes it goes faster. I am not sure how to enourage a baby to take deep breathes. As a baby my daughter always slept through neb treatments and they always took forever. Is your baby holding his breath when he gets really mad?

Thanks for all the answers. It seems like 15 minutes must be the norm, but we could have sworn that the respiratory therapist told us it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes?? Hopefully he will just adjust soon.
Beccamom - That is what I was thinking, that there was some kind of salt or calcium build up from our tap water, so we've started using distilled water & will pay attention to see if we see any kind of residue left behind.
When he gets upset he is taking deep breathes b/c he is crying, but he is so squirmy we can't keep the mask over his face the entire time. (We usually just have to hold it over his face b/c if we strap the mask to him he will pop his cheek by trying to pull it off.)

I always hear about these babies that sleep through their treatments...Mason doesn't. If he does its very rare & he has fallen asleep from a long day or woken up earlier than usual.

We have very hard water, so when our water softener was dying -- I'd get white chalking residue on the neb cups, so every once in awhile, I'd soak/rinse them with vinegar before boiling them. Breaks down the calcium deposits.
