HTS

Every time I go to my appointments, my doctor brings up using hyper tonic saline-- she isn't pushy but just asks if I wanted to start using it. I always say that I feel that I dont need it at this point b/c I'm already on albuterol and pulmozyme once daily and TOBI every other month along with Flonase, clarinex d and zithromax m,w,f.
My reasoning is that my FEV1 is between 109%-117% as well as thinking that IF my lung function does decrease, that it would be good to have something to start using that I haven't before.
But is that just stupid reasoning? I mean it's probably better to stop the damage from even starting then to use it in a reactive situation, on the other hand- I don't want my body to become dependent on it or become used to it so that it looses it's efficacy, especially since I'm doing so well right now.
I also experiencing some irritation when using TOBI- i feel like it just rips my throat up and my voice breaks a lot when I use it. I'm afraid that the HTS will be too abrasive for me.
But I feel like I may be being stupid if I'm not using every weapon out there to keep myself healthy. I want to be able to say I fought my hardest and not regret that I could have done more...

Whats everyones thoughts opinions on this, and for those who use HTS- what are your experiences?

I think they are suspecting that HTS also aids in preventing colds and stuff too. They are doing a study on that right now with the kiddos here in Arizona.

I just saw that they are now selling a nasal saline spray with 3% hypertonic solution. I grabbed that up really quick<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Missa, mind if I ask where you found it? I'd like to grab that too <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

I wish they had HS when my lung function was still high. It makes a world of difference to me, and I think that it has helped with colds/severity of colds, etc. I don't tolerate Tobi well either (I just stopped it today, about 4 days early, bc of shortness of breath and irritation/mild bleeding due to irritation).
I don't usually tolerate the 7% HS twice a day really well (but it's doable, like now). Unless I'm sick, I do 7% in the morning- to get the all night crud moving- and 3% in the evening. The 3% is also cheaper (pm me if you want the info <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ). I don't cough up as much, but it still works.
I don't think you have anything to lose by trying it, especially the 3%. You may be pleasantly surprised over the long run. The extra coughing isn't fun, but the freed up airways are really nice <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

And if I understand it right, HS works by drawing water up from the lining of the lung, and "floating" the thick mucus that won't move out of the cillia back to the top of the cillia so that it can be moved out. It's not like a drug that you can become resistant to, or build up a tolerance to- it's just the plain old science of salt drawing water out of a surface <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> .

i have to chime in on this one.

andee is totally right. hts, like pulmozyme, is a drug that you won't become resistant to, and it's amazingly effective for most patients. i read in a study that hts decreased the rate of pulmonary exacerbations by up to 50% when used 2x/day. i can see why, if you're relatively healthy now, you might think that it's better to wait and have hts as a "back up option" of sorts (and if it were an antibiotic or other resistance-forming drug, you'd be wise to do so), but honestly, once the damage is there it's always going to be harder to fight off. an ounce of prevention is totally worth a pound of cure in this case.

i've been on hts basically since it became available, and i can honestly say that it works as well for me now as it ever did. if i'm not too junky, i breathe it in and it hydrates and helps move the mucus in my lungs. if i'm really junky, i breathe it in and it hydrates the mucus AND makes me cough up a storm (when there's a lot in there this stuff really makes it move!). i've never felt a decreasing effect, even as my lung function has declined through the years.

if it's about "saving" the good drugs until you really, really need them, then just think about how many great antibiotics you're saving for yourself by decreasing or preventing altogether your need for them now, while you still have good lung function. THOSE are the drugs to be worried about keeping as back ups!

just my 2 cents.
