Humidity & CF

I have emailed my doctor about this, but unfortunately she is out of the office until next week..I live in New York City and the past two weeks my cough has become increasingly more productive. Some nights I am up with sinus issues, acid reflux and more of a cough than I ever have. During the day it's the same thing. I am feeling fine otherwise, just always feeling like I have stickiness in my throat and it's very phlegmy. My question is could the intense humidity that we have been having the past few weeks be just increasing my symptoms? I am new to the CF community so I know it's related b/c I don't think I am getting an infection or anything. Could I just be dehydrated and then the humidity is just making everything worse? Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

I think humidity can be a factor. I recently returned from a trip to a hot humid place. My dd w/cf would cough (only dry cough though) several times a day while her baseline is no cough. When we moved towns during our trip and spent a few days in a hot dry place, she did not cough at all.

Humidity will make your lungs work harder to filter our the moisture from the air so any symptoms are often exagerated. I HATE humidity. I went to Spain a few years ago, it was 35C and 0% humidity and ive never felt better chest wise!

Humidity can (and will) definitely make your symptoms worse/more pronounced. If you are dehydrated on top of that, it just adds fuel the fire.

Unfortunately where I live (Houston) it's almost always 50% - 90% humidity...and it's difficult to breathe outside esp during exhertion. My doc even suggested moving to AZ a few years ago, but I don't plan on doing anything that drastic.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!

^When I was a kid, my doctor also wanted me to move to Arizona. The humidity is awful on my lungs. I could only stand a few minutes outside today.

Thanks! It's hard to tell because normally my productiveness of the cough was only in the morning and the rest of the time it was dry if at all...and just these past few weeks have been more intense! my doc did email me back to tell me to come in if i feel like it's far from baseline, but it's still hard to tell since i feel fine otherwise! yikes i can't wait until the fall!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I can't wait for fall either, I can't take the heat anymore with my lungs!
