Thanks! It's hard to tell because normally my productiveness of the cough was only in the morning and the rest of the time it was dry if at all...and just these past few weeks have been more intense! my doc did email me back to tell me to come in if i feel like it's far from baseline, but it's still hard to tell since i feel fine otherwise! yikes i can't wait until the fall!! </end quote>

I can't wait for fall either, I can't take the heat anymore with my lungs!

Does anyone know if increased productiveness means there is an infection? I am trying to decide if i need to go to my doctor...I don't really want to go if it's not necessary. Should I wait it out a few days?

I do not find humidity to affect me at all. Yes, it is thick and I need some A/C but in general it does not make me cough more or anything.

Arizona Sucks! Just sayin'...

Here, they tell you to be careful about NOT getting enough moisture and secretions drying up - causing other damage! So, really, you have to decide what's best for you. Me, after 17 years in AZ - I'm heading to Florida!

Hey Emily,

Yep increased productiveness is a sign of infection. However you can have increased production without an infection. Humidity does this to me for sure. It's kinda like taking a hot shower or being in a steam room. Both make me cough more because the increased humidity thins the mucus more.

That being said I'd rather be overly cautious than let it slide. If there is an infection it's better to treat it early than to let it damage the lungs further. If I'm feeling wimpy my doc usually does blood work and a sputum culture. By looking at my white blood count he can tell if it's likely I have an active infection. Your lung functions will most likely be down as well if you have an infection.

So my advice would be to go see your doc and get things checked out. Yep it's a pain in the rear but at least you'll get treatment early if you need it.

Welcome to the community. There are lots of great people on hear if you need anything at all.

Peace,
Steph

Hi Emily,
Yeah that sounds about right. I live in a desert and have the exact opposite problem - I get dried out and can't move anything. Then when I travel to the coast I notice an immediate increase in sputem prodcution.
As for the doctor it can never hurt to at least get an opinion when he/she returns.
However, if you feel like you have increased infection then waiting is probably not a good idea.
Good luck,
- peter

I am the same as Peter. I live in NV and when I go to the hospital in S.F. especially if its in Fall or Spring when its still actually a bit cooler... the humidity does wonders for me. It lubs me up. Plus I am as sea level, which I can really tell a difference.

I asked one of my doctors once if it is better to be in the dry areas vs. more humid (b/c you hear both things) and he said, in general I think it is, but when you have dry areas you have to worry about the dirt particles and wind more blowing stuff into the air.

It must just be what works best for you...
