Tami.
I can tell you what we do. Maggie has been doing Hypersal for a few years now...She is 6 1/2 years old and I think she started it she she was 4 (I forget)...SHe might have been younger. She has always done the Hypersal the full amp(4 ml) twice a day. When she first started the Hypersal she coughed ALOT, throughout the day(not at night) but she was sick at the time...We always do an albuterol neb before the HTS to open her airway first, it lessens the bronchospasms from the high salt content as well. We do her Pulmozyme once a day in the am, she started that at 2 1/2 years old. FOr the most part Maggie only coughs a little bit from the HTS while she is doing the neb...When she is getting sick like a cold or resp virus or a new bacteria is brewing she'll cough alot more with the HTS. Sometimes though she may not cough at all with the HTS(this is when she is doing REALLY well. We also do the HTS with a mask; not mouthpiece. I have noticed a dramatic difference in Maggie's sinuses and ability to get better from colds from inhaling the HTS this way..Cleans out the mucus/boogers from her nose; usually it comes out in a strand of mucus, I know tmi but it works. Another thing that helps is I give Maggie a big cup of juice/milk after her HTS...lessens the coughing and the salt makes her thirsty and can irritate her throat..Maggie tends to drink ALOT of fluids. This also helps get rid of mucus. One last thing is I've tried to do Maggie's HTS and VEST at the same time and she hates it..But occasionally we do this in a time crunch; This is another great way to get the gunk out though. HTH....
