Hypertonic Saline Use for Infant

My DD was diagnosed late at 14 months, and therefore has lung involvement. She started Pulmozyme at that time, but a couple months later began HS. I really think the HS has helped her the most. She was asked to be in the HS study, but I refused because I was unwilling to risk her getting the placebo. It has been a year now and DD has only been on oral antibiotics once to help her get over a cold without a flare-up. My opinion is why wait for involvement...prevent it. I often wonder if my DD would have lung involvement had she been diagnosed at birth and had the benefit of preventative treatment.

Emily started on HS 7% when she was about 9 months old. We have found it to be very beneficial to her, and she has tolerated it well! Prior to going on it, she always had "crackles" in her lungs. Now, her lungs are almost always clear. Her main issues are sinus related. For clarity and fairness, I should say that she also cultured psuedomonas consistently until around the same time...HS was one of hte things that we "replaced" TOBI with when she cultured free of psuedo.

Emily is in the ISIS study, too, partly because we felt so strongly that it had helped her and we wanted it to be available to other kids. We suspect that she is on the placebo (again, not rocket science...) since the "crackles" returned during her 30 day withdrawl period and have stayed.

Mariah's mom...I'm going to try to PM you about the infant PFT...I was worried too, the first time, but it's OK. It will be over quick and she'll be fine!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Our daughter started using it when she was 2.5 years old, she had some irritation at first but that was to be expected. Her bhroncs have been excellent that last three years she has been on it.

I have been using the hypertonic saline, and I definitely think it was the best choice. Sam has no lung involvement yet, but keeping those lungs hydrated is so important. Thanks for all the support and advice.
