Hypertonic Saline

Emily is 2 1/2 and has been on HTS and Pulmozyme for a while now. At least a year. She does well with the HTS unless she is getting sick. Then, sometimes she coughs so much that she throws up. Right now she does 5ML of 7% twice a day, and Pulmozyme once a day. She rarely has a problem with pulmozyme.

The difference in her chest x-rays before and after HTS is amazing. We are very happy with it. I've never been concerned about it not being tested on little ones, but that's just me.

My 2 yr old is on the 7%HS and has been for about 6 months. He first tried it out in clinic to make sure that he could handle it. He does it twice a day and does Pulmozyme once a day. He handles it fine, usually only coughing when he is sick. I'm really happy with it and think it has really helped him clear his lungs.

Thanks for all the replies!

Yeah, I am extremely excited about him starting the HTS as I have heard plenty of good things about it! I guess what had me a bit concerned, was I know from reading on here many of the pulmos have you neb it for the first time at the office in case of a reaction.....my sons pulmo saw no need in that though. So I guess it just made me a little curious on how many are on HTS under the age of 6 and how well they handle the HTS.
I mean it's not like he can really tell me, all that well if something is bothering him - chest tightness and so on......

Thanks again though for the replies, it gave me that little extra boost of confidence I think I needed to get the HTS started!

Hypertonic saline can irritate the airways; make you cough more and cause chest tightness. Does your son neb Albuterol or a bronchodilator? We do an albuterol neb before the HTS to prevent wheezing. Personally, I can not say enough good things about the HTS. When my daughter first started it, she coughed alot, yes; but she also gained weight her appetite improved and she has not been on the "big guns" antibiotics since before she started the HTS. No way to know for sure, but I feel it has improved her lung function and prevented colds from turning into secondary infections.
