To top it off, every second or third night, she winds up gagging and throwing up her overnight feeding.

Talk to the GI nurse or nutritionist, a CF doc just doesn't understand g-tube stuff. Our boys needed to try different formulas before finding one that worked. Some are very heavy. What are you using? Don't give up on it yet, it is still new. The results are definately worth it!

Aw, Heather. This was supposed to solve things, not cause problems. I am SO sorry. I have no direct experience but am offering my support and encouragement to not stop seeking answers before you abandon this idea that was so hard to do in the first place. Ugh.

I'll be looking for an update; hope you can post one soon. <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

I was going to say what Jane said. Talk to the GI people. If the problem is reflux, they will be able to adjust her meds. I agree, too, that not all fourmulas work for everyone, also, not all methods of administering enzymes for overnight feeds will work for everyone. What seems like reflux might be the result of not having enough enyme for the feed, thus, having excess fat and acid in the stomache. Try a pre-digested formula or different enzyme.

Emily goes through phases where she will throw up the overnight feed in the morning...for about 4 -5 days in a row. Then it resolves itself. The extra laundry and the lost calories are both VERY disheartening. But, we have learned that her stomach and "system" eventually work things out, given the chance. I know that's not the case for everyone.

I'm so sorry you are so frustrated with this. I KNOW it was a hard decision to make, and to feel like it wasn't worth it is pure torture. I think you have options, and with time and trial and error you will hit on a winnin combination. It took us at least a couple of months before I felt like we had found our "groove" and we started to see some weight gain.

Good luck. I will be thinking of you!

I just don't know what to do

I just got a gtube myself... so here's my story <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I've struggled with weight for all 24 years of my life, but especially in the last 6 or so. I finally gave into getting the tube last April. At first, I thought it was the biggest mistake of my life. I didn't tolerate the feeds, my reflux got worse, my daily appetite decreased, it just was overall bad. Now, I've added a second antacid and I've played with the rate that the formula goes in. Plus, I try to sleep on a slight incline.

Here's how I determined the formula rate. I kept increasing the rate each night until I felt gross in the morning. As soon as I began to feel gross, I would decrease the rate each night until I was fine in the morning again. Granted, this has caused the amount of formula and the time it takes to complete the feed to change over the last few months, but I feel much better because of it. Also, by doing a little less over the night, my day time appetite is starting to return! I have gained about 10lbs since I've started the feeds and it has helped keep my weight stable during lung flares.

Please don't give up on it just yet... it really is beneficial! As much as I hated the tube at first, it's like my little buddy now and I realize it's what's going to keep me going until I get my transplant. I need all the extra weight I can get for that surgery!!

You'll be in my prayers!
