For a year now I've been doing the P90X workout system by BeachBody. Over the year I went to my Clinic visits and each time my PFT's increased. My Doc was shockeds, mostly because I'm 41 yrs old.
So, for the new year I want to help others with CF to do the same. I'm not going to ly to you, its hard work, but together, we can do it.
Check out my website, pick a workout plan (there's tons) that fit you, join my group and I will be happy to help.

I've always believed that exercise is the key to CF and I'm glad PX90 is working for you!

When I was really sick and trying my hardest to stop my decline, I worked out harder than I did when preparing for the marathon. My CF doc advised me that exercise, surprisingly, doesn't impact FEV1. Well, in my case, he was right. No matter what I did or how much better my exercise tolerance got, my FEV1 kept declining.

So if exercise doesn't increase a persons FEV1 then is it any better for Cfers then ppl without CF? Just for overall fitness and health? Does help clear out the lungs though right?

It definitely helps to clear the lungs out..esp high impact movements (jogging, jumping, etc.) not walking, elliptical, or any low impact stuff.

The benefits of exercise are HUGE for cf'ers. For example, it stimulates appetite, puts on much needed lean tissue, increases blood flow, gives us energy, bone density, and honestly, a better quality of life. The benefits are the same for everyone, but CF'ers can really use it.

Hey Lex,
I'm asking my Doc for my PFT's from this time last year, before P90X and then my last visit. I want to see where my increase happened.
I used to be a runner, did cross country in HS and ran for years. But now I have bad hips <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> So I cant run, will for long distances.
I think doing P90X is so different from all the other things I've tried in the past and the results blew me away, but medically and physically. Last summer I was in the best shape I've been in since I was 20ish.
I wish you well and soon as I get my numbers, I'll post it here. Have a Great Breathing Day!

OK here are my actual numbers from my Doctor.

Date: May '09 FVC 4.13 / FEV1 2.09 / FEF (25-75) .65
Date: June 2010 FVC 4.33 / FEV1 2.23 / FEF .75

They both said whatever I was doing, it works.

Congrats on your increase!

I've changed from cardio to weight/strength training nearly two years ago as well when cardio just didn't do anything for me anymore but make me tired. My lungs would limit me long before anything else of my body would get tired or loaded. (FEV1's in the 30%'s) Weightlifting is different in that sets are short so I can atleast load my body and heart before running out of oxygen, cathing my breath between sets. Kind of the other way around.

Even though I couldn't increase my FEV1's atleast they've been stable for a while now and also got the benefits already mentioned above by Lex. Also the increased strength alone simply makes day to day activities a bit lighter and my body seemingly a bit more oxygen-efficient effectively increasing lungfunction anyway..
