If You HAVE to Skip SOMETHING...

You sound much like my son. I guess he will do it when he feels bad enough I wonder why I worry more about him now that he is 22 rather when he was younger. I know part is a control thing, but he has taken care of himself since he was 13! It must be because we are all getting older.

When I had to do all of this stuff (before transplants) I tended to skip the CPT. That was more because I was allergic to the material in the vest and I had to have my husband use the percussor on me. So, needless to say, when he was working overtime, it was skipped a lot. I also had trouble with the HTS...it would irritate me really bad. I was on 10% when the 7% wasn't released here in the US yet. It was horrible and tended to irritate me more than it helped. Now there is the 7% and I don't need it anymore. I did all the other ones though because they helped me a lot.

I do not have to do the CPT or the breathing treatments anymore and all I take is pills. Now I don't skip anything but sometimes I accidentally miss a dose. That has only happened twice in the last year and a half though because missing the anti-rejection is not good!

I RARELY skip anything and do the vest no matter what cause I can do it while I do my nebs (xopenex and H.S.), so it doesn't add time unless I do it alone.

If I do skip anything, I will skip H.S. since its not a medication. I do usually feel gunkier, but at least I'm not missing a bronchodialator or antibiotic.

Usually the only reason I'll skip something is if my neb isn't dry from the first treatment or if they're all in the dishwasher or something... I never skip cause I don't have time... I make time, even if, like others, it means cutting down on "fun" stuff or sleep. But, when treatment parts are wet or getting cleaned, there is no choice. I know its just poor time management on my part when this happens cause if I'd think ahead there would always be a neb ready and waiting for me, but sometimes I simply "forget" or think I have more time to dry them than really happens.

Anyway, I agree in a perfect world no treatments would be skipped, but I also think we're human with human schedules and it is sometimes inevitable for most people, especially those who work as well as try to manage their CF schedules! I think most people do remarkably well with managing all this crap, even if/when we do skip occasionally for reasons out of our control.
