If You HAVE to Skip SOMETHING...

It is so encouraging to read that all of your treatments are so important. My 22 year old son skips treatment and meds all of the time. Since he is in college and out from under my thumb<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> it is so difficult for me to see him ruin his lungs. He has not done chest compression for about a year. He relies on meds to help him out. He has done so well so far in his life, and it just tears me up to see him not take as good of care of himself as he can. When does it click? How old will he have to be before he sees how important all treatments are?

Hi mywish,

he has to take ownership of his CF. I didn't do that until I was 27 (I am 28 now.) It's something I am still working on. Once I decided to "own" my health, and started checking in w. this website, I realized the importance of treatments and meds and how LUCKY I have been so far.

How is he with talking/thinking about his CF? Is he in denial about it? When I was in denial about my CF it was too painful to even acknowledge that I had it, let alone take ownership of doing all the treatments. I had to suck it up, get a job w. health insurance, learn to make/keep appointments and do all the paperwork necessary to having CF.

I'm sure he'll come around sooner rather than later...perhaps having him also talk w. an older CF person to "mentor" him could be helpful.

Mywish - I was the same as your son. I did CPT only about six times total in a year away at college. I rarely breathed my meds and didn't take good care of myself in general. I went a few years there where I didn't take good care of myself. Now I do. I agree with Welshwitch - He has to take ownership of his health. My mom always did everything for me growing up, so it was hard for me when I moved out to take care of myself. I knew I needed to do this and that, but as far as taking owndership of it, I did not. Hopefully a light bulb will go off in his head soon. Maybe you can send him a link to this forum. :) Take Care

Wow, I am really bad compared to everyone else. I skip the vest all the time - as in, I skip it more often than I actually do it. This is because I never notice that it even does anything for me, be it the same day or the day after. However, I only cough up junk a few times a day, and I don't feel stuff rattling in my chest unless I am sick (and when I am sick I do 3 sessions with the vest each day).

I do make sure to get in 2 hours of cardio each week, usually divided into 4-5 days, and I only skip it if I am sick or traveling. I NEVER skip antibiotics, but I will sometimes skip hypertonic saline if I am traveling. And sometimes I forget to take some of my meds (allegra, advair, and/or veramyst) when I am rushing off to work.
