Hi Heather,

I am praying and hoping that you little baby girl doesn't need the hospital, but if she does, just remember, it will make her better, ward off any lung infections which could cause lung damage.. and she will be feeling much better for the holidays.

Let us know.. I feel for you,

Jennifer

Hi

I can't anwswer your questions but i can't imagine how dissapointing and terrifying this must be for you and your family!! I absolutely agree with the previous poster that doctors shouldn't be predicting severity. I know that probably doesn't help you in any way now. I will be hoping for the best possible outcome for your daughter.

Best wishes and good luck!

I want to share wih you this, my son was breastfed and he was very pancreatic insuffient from the go and i had to stop breast feeding him at 6 weeks but as far as him having lung issues he has none. He was in the hospital from 4 weeks til he was diagnosed at 7 weeks but came home on his 9th week of life. he has more bowel issues then anything else . That doctor should not be predicting how your child will fare out because every c.f case is different and they are not god . I was told when i asked how my child would fare he plainly told me time will tell and every child is unique in how they handle the c.f. One thing i will point out my son was on the trial of zithromax for 10 days as a infant and they said he would do better then most because the trials for the 10 day use of zithromax as a young infant has had promising results .My son has benefited from him being that trial use. you should look into that it is very benefical for them and it for some reason only works for babies under 1 yr for protection so do not delay ask them about that .my belief is he has no lung issues due to that trial use of zithromax they put him through as a young infant...Even though i dealt with him stooling out while on it ,it has been a great protection for him in the end it seems..

Heather,

I am thinking and praying for you. We jetted over to our pediatrician just a bit ago. Our infant's diapers were unusually smelly and I totally freaked out. I just thought...what if she has diabeties and CF? What a mess that would be!

There's nothing worse than waiting for a seemingly healthy child to start showing symptoms of anything....and then when it is your worst fear that "it" has begun...your heart just sinks. I'm just waiting for my day for our infant.

You've got my email. Holler if you need me. I'm here!!

UPDATE

The doctor said that she looks good right now, even gained two ounces in the last week!! She'll have a chest x-ray in the morning and he did a culture today. If both come back clear, we will assume the cough is just a lingering virus or two back-to-back viruses. I am hopeful that will be our course. He said he won't hospitalize unless the culture indicates a bug that needs IV's.

Thanks for all the kind words. Some days in this CF world are harder than others.

The doctor said that if we do go to the hospital, it'd be two full weeks. Is this normal? Man, that is a LONG time to lock up a baby AND to maneuver my schedule, my husbands, my sons, etc.

When my son was admitted I was told it would be for two weeks of IVs. They placed his picc line, checked the med levels by drawing blood and adjusted them as needed, made sure I could do the IVs myself, and sent us home finish the IVs at home. Two weeks of IVs sounds about right, but you may be able to finish them at home. I'd be glad to answer more questions if you have any!

2 weeks is the amount of time that a virulent bacteria such as PA needs to be treated. It takes a lot of medication to get that bug to pipe down. It's awful!

My son started out with the croup then it turned into viral pnemonia then he was hospitalized because the doctor said it was the c.f acting up and it had to controled so 14 days later we went home no cough , sometimes its just the actual disease that needs treated with the iv antibiotics because my son cultured clean , the c.f thing is tricky on how it will flare up and then seemingly settle down.It took me a long while to understand the entire c.f thing was unpredictable even though i was told that. Just look at it as a good thing for your daughter, she will eat better afterwards which is a good thing. Yes it is a long time to have a baby confined but better to get it taken care of then to have it continually act up and change viral infections . This was the first time it has done this with my son 4 now but with all this stuff in the world going on things are changing. I WILL PRAY FOR YOU! I hope the chest x-ray turns up clear so it will rest ur mind some....
