I'm refusing a picc

I'm 26 weeks pregnant and my lung functions have dropped 40% so we're looking at a 14 day IV cycle. My doctor mentioned getting a picc and I'm terrified. I haven't been hospitalized since I was 2 (I'm 29) but back then they used IV's and it worked just fine. I'm assuming the worst that can happen with an IV is needing to replace it every 5 days or so?

Has anyone opted for an IV over picc line? A picc just seems so excessive considering the term I'll need it.

Candice - What did they put you on during your pregnancy? And for how long? And were you able to be at home?

I posted on your thread in pregnancy. I also wanted to mention the less interaction you have you to have with the hosptial doing procedures puncturing your skin (such as IV replacing) the better becuase you'll be less likely to pick up a new bug. Do you already culture MRSA? If you get a PICC you can get in and get out of the hospital most quickly.

Depending on the drug a normal iv may only last a day or two because the stronger drugs are hard on the veins.

If you can get a picc i really would, but i do understand your concern. i have had a horrible history with piccs because my veins would spasm and clamp down on the picc line while they were trying to thread it in. so they had to consiously sedate me to place it. i also developed blood clots in my picc..which meant 6 weeks on blood thinners. so needless to say there are many times i have also refused a picc, and opted for regular IV. (let me say before i scare you to death, most people do NOT have these problems)...i now have a port and do not have to worry about the picc issues. But if you do not have to have IV antibiotics frequently, a port may be to extreme. my docs let me do a regular IV a couple different times for a 2 week course, because of my history with piccs. I even got to go home on a regular IV once, and home health came to put a new one in every 3 days. i would recommend you think about the picc line though. For most people it is an easy procedure and takes hardly anytime. the first couple piccs i got were successful and went in great! they are much less to up keep. and regular IVs are really hard on your veins with the strong antibiotics. you also can clot off the end of the iv easily having to have it replaced sooner than every 3 days. im sorry you are having to go through this while your pregnant too! i hope you feel better!
