Our son is going to be starting at home IV therapy for a bug he cannot get rid of with oral and inhaled meds. Anyone have tips or info. they would like to share?

We're happy they're letting him do this at home since we live far away from our CF clinic/hospital and it's going to be a 3-week treatment. We just hope it works!!

Thanks!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'm a big fan of in-home IV therapy. But, nosocomal infections have nearly killed my kids at least twice in his life.

DEMAND the infusion balls. With those, its super easy. You just watch the time to keep it right on target. Flush the line, hook up the ball, wait for it to infuse, flush and lock. Get a leg warmer and everything can be tucked into the leg warmer even during infusions.

We have done home IV's many times and are currently doing it again. This schedule of meds is hard, but we are managing. The only thing is, she cant go to school while infusing...so she is going to miss about two more weeks.
I hope all goes well for you all...if you have any problems or questions when you start, feel free to pm me.

as testifytolove said you HAVE to get the infusion balls. they are a lot easier to deal with than the gravity drips or syringe pumps or anything like that. especially since your son is in his teens these will give him a lot more freedom to move around the house or go out with friends etc. i used to just throw mine in my purse or backpack, etc. and go out to the mall, movies, restaurants and when it was time to infuse i just hooked myself up in a bathroom and threaded the tubing through my shirt and back into my purse/bag and went about my business.

also for your med schedule and stuff get them to set it to times that work for YOU. if they are not at convenient times, say 3am, get them to walk the meds back/forward 1 hour at every dose until it's at a time that works for you and your son.

i did go to school one time when i did IVs, but my school had a health center so i would go there at my scheduled dosing time, do the dose and go back to class. i only did this once and never again b/c i didn't get to sufficiently rest and truly recover and ended up on IVs again during the summer. so i don't recommend that. i would talk to the school and see what can be worked out with teachers and stuff for getting his work to do at home. i'm sure something can be worked out.

hope he gets to feeling better soon
