As others have said, you are not alone!! Pre-tx, I had a huge issue with wetting myself when I was coughing, not matter if I had just gone to the bathroom or not. During the times that I was coughing more than normal, I would wear a pad so I didn't pee all over myself.

Add me to the list of people telling you that you are not alone! I have had two chldren naturally so that only adds to the issues! I also use it as an indicator of needing IV meds. When I break into the big bladder control pads I know it is time for IV abx. Yes, I have set my diginity aside and bought Poise pads. Rather that than wetting myself in public. I have my annual GYN exam this week and I am going to ask about options. I am not crazy about surgery but I think my doctor has an outpatient procedure. Ugh. I worry about coughing the surgery undone but Jenna's story gives me hope.

Well apparently you got your answer. I too have had similar issues (never resorting to pads or anything). But when I cough in public, I have to make sure to stop walking and 'pull over' (if I am shopping, in the middle of an aisle) so that I can just concentrate on not peeing.

I have never heard of that being a sign of infection though! I find that interesting, something to be aware of next time I am feeling unwell.

This started for me, too, when I was about your age. Wait until you're older! I've never been pregnant, but I'm in menopause. As you get older your bladder drops and the muscle is around what is lowered so that when you cough, sneeze, etc. the muscle squeezes and out it squirts! Dr. Oz did a program on it once and illustrated it.

I hate wearing a pad all of the time - it causes a lot of irritation since I already have all of the meds playing a number on me - so when I'm home I try to empty out often and my motto is: Don't leave home without one! (Poise, that is!)

(Of course this happens to those of us who need to drink lots of water, huh?)

Yep, same here!!!

I have had this problem since I was little. When I cough attack it is a lost cause. Even when I sneeze I try to find a bathroom. I aways wear something to protect me. I also have urgency issues. When I have to go... I have to go. Had many accidents as a child... all the way through adulthood. Hubby just knows when I say I need a bathroom that I need one quick.

You're not alone. I asked my doctor about it and he said their isnt much they can do. It's where your pelvic muscles are sooo strong from years of coughing. I usually were a thin pantieliner (Carefree Thin - cant feel them) all the time. That way if there is a little accident, I wont need new underwear each time & will get me through until I can get to the bathroom, quickly of course. I keep a few liners in my pockets at all times as well. I also cross my legs when I know I am going to have a coughing spell or cough hard.

Hi

You are totally not the only one.. it's really common with years of coughing and also apparently your nutritional status affects it.

I'm like some of the other posters in that I usually notice it not so much when I'm well but a bit of a problem when I've spent weeks with an increased cough or loosing weight (muscle strength dips).

I think it's quite difficult to get total cure bc the cause obviously can't be removed - but my advice would be to really stick with the kegel exercises as well as seeing a physio and learning a good pelvic floor and core muscle exercise routine to do twice a day. It takes a long time which is why it doesn't immediately result in less leakage but over time it really does help. I never used to think that the clenching exercises and core muscle strength would make much difference and was convinced I probably had damaged my bladder or something, but I honestly don't get much problems at all right now. x
