Inhaling HS

I started using the HS (3%)while in was still in the hospital about a month and a half ago. I noticed the difference right away. After i was done inhaling it, i tried to relax and take a nap, but i had so much loosened mucus just wanting to be coughed out, so i got quite a bit out. I was not used to having to cough so much out after using only Pulmozyme, so i knew it had to be the HS.

Both my kids say they feel a difference within a matter of days - so I would think a 30 day trial was pretty fare on your part. But you never know if it might work better at a different time for you, so if you feel like trying it again, go for it ! Do keep in mind too that the coughing is a nice side effect/benefit .... the main reason behind doing HS is to add the slippery lining on top of the cilia in the lungs so that the mucus can more easily be moved up and out.... you might not be able to "feel" this happening.

Do you use any kind of airway clearance device after using the hypertonic saline? What I find amazing about H.S. is that sometimes I will think I have absolutely no congestion...

Then I'll do the H.S. (after a bronchodilator) and still think I have no mucus. Then I will do the Flutter and boom! I cough up all this stuff. I also do the Flutter for 20 to 30 minutes. If I'm going somewhere I'll do it in the car.

The other thing that you mentioned is that you were choosing between either H.S. or Colistin. I'm not sure I understand . H.S. helps clear thick mucus out of the lungs. Colistin is an antibiotic that kills very specific bugs. Hopefully if you get all the mucus out of your lungs and control inflamation -- it's possible that you wouldn't have many exacerbations and maybe wouldn't even need Colistin. That's been my experience.

Does anyone feel the effect of HTS using different neb machines because I do. I have 2 neb machines, both are compressors but the nebcup thing is different. Using the one i notice the effect of the salt more and it also makes me more productive, immediately as in while i am still nebbing I cough up a whole lot of gunk. with my other neb i don't notice that i am even inhaling it, perhaps there is still the benefit but it's not so obvious. did anyone else notice this? I used to think it does not work for me, until i tried it on the 2nd neb machine and now i am converted. maybe it makes a difference. Does anyone do HTS using an ultrasonic nebulizer?
