Insurance once you get married

Hi Sweetie-

My husband and I got married June 2007 by a civil service in the courthouse. I was with COBRA through my employer and it was coming to the 18 month mark where they drop you.

We were already engaged and decided to tie the knot, so I can be part of his insurance policy. My husband is a police officer and has good benefits.

We had a ceremony and married by a priest this past May in the Bahamas! It was the best of both worlds.

I do have medicare, but that is secondary, as when we got married his plan became my first health care policy. I actually rarely use my medicare card. We do pay a good amount per month in health care, but now we dont have to deal with an annual and lifetime cap.

Plus Cobra was costing me 625$ a month!!

It is unfortunate you have to think about that in a time in your life where you are so excited to get married, but you have to do what you have to do!

Kristy and patty,
I know that sucks--I have to worry about insurance, when I would rather worry about marrying the person I love!!! Can I ask roughly what you guys pay out each month for all your medical costs with insurance?

My future hubby has a great job now as a pilot, but who knows what that industry will be bringing with gas prices. He anticipates lay-offs but not sure if he will be one of them. The problem is our wedding is planned for September--the same month we find out if he is laid off. I don't want to plan all this time and money into a wedding and find out at the last minute that he might be the one losing his job

I do have medicare which currently is primary (since my dad is retired) and also have my dad's insurance secondary. However once we get married it is my understanding that medicare will become secondary and my future hubby's will be primary. I am just worried because I have a friend who just has medicare and struggles every month to pay her medical bills...any advice? cindy

precisely the dilemma we are facing now although I do have medicare under my own work record and not my dad's, so I will not lose medicare once I am married

Well, under my husband's insurance we have to pay out like $700 or more out of pocket per year for meds. Once we reach that out of pocket, his insurance covers 100% on the meds (except for the over the counter ones...they won't pay for those). I do not have Medicare Part D so I do not have med coverage through them.

Before I had Medicare, between co-pays, our part on hospital bills, the med-flights that I had, traveling for the transplants and other appointments, and whatever, we had paid over $10,000 out of pocket in 2007! I am having trouble paying off the rest of the bills and some have gone into collections.

Since the Medicare, I don't think we've had to pay out of pocket for anything (except for the meds of course). I think they are way behind on billing or something because I haven't seen much from either BCBS or Medicare lately in the way of explanation of benefits.

Having CF, flat out, is really expensive without insurance (even with). Add in the transplants and it about kills you financially. I have told people that the transplants saved my life but it is killing us financially. I wouldn't change the decisions that I made though and I would do it all again.
