Insurance question

We need to look into this also. New York Life and Gerber have denied us, Mutual of Omaha is "looking into this". I do know of another family whose insurance agent was able to get them hooked up with "Farmers" something or other.

talk to your social worker at the CF Center. they should be able to point you in the right direction.

in PA there is the CHIP program for children without other insurance or Medical Assistance for children with chronic medical conditions.

we have insurance for our CFer and secondary insurance via Medical Assistance so I know it can work.</end quote></div>

i think he was talking about life insurance.

Not trying to be insulting here but why would you want life insurance on a child? Most (if not all) financial planners agree that self insuring actually saves you money in the long term. Not to mention the fact that insurance companies are in the business of making money. They spend big money on actuaries to calculate odds/risk and determine policy costs so they can make money off of your insecurities.

Sure life insurance makes sense for parents so we can make sure that in the event of our untimely demise our children are cared for. Beyond that life insurance isn't really necessary. Do a little on-line research or make an appointment with a financial planner (certified).

Claudette, Here's my perspective...
cf babies turn into adults who wish they could get life insurance. I am the breadwinner at the moment in my family. My husband has great earning potential but for now he is a post doc. With a baby on the way, if I was to die tomorrow I'd sure wish I was leaving a little $ behind for my boys to carry on with their way of life uninterrupted. Of course, they'd have my sizeable 401K but none of that is designated to my son as would be with life insurance.

One of my only regrets of my parents care of me is that they didn't get life insurance on me before my diagnosis. I was sick for 2.5 years....plenty of time to get it lined up. Oh well. I did manage to get Aflac to give me short term disability which I'm about to collect on with my maternity leave so maybe I can still find a co. to offer me life insurance. Who knows? Bottom line, I think it's a good idea to get life insurance for your little one's. I'll definitely be getting my son a policy before he gets any cf testing.
