hey all

I just finished 5 week abx 2 oral (cipro) and 3 IV + oral (tobi, ceftaz, merropenem, levaquin). I had very severe diarhea the last week (with merr/levaquin combo) and now one week post and it is still not 'normal' for me and now last night I had pain bad enough to wake me up 3-4times. It feels like its in a straight line across my midsection about 3' below the top of my ribcage if that makes any sense--like I wouldnt describe it as 'stomach' pain necessarily it seems higher but if it was in my stomach it would be at the top.

They were going to run a c.diff on me at my last clinic but doc thought I was fine so we didnt jsut said call if dont improve post end IV's. Well it improved so I didnt call.

I thought c.diff was 'severe' enough that wouldnt be it but I have no idea what it might be.

thoughts????

ps I have had a history with severe acid reflux after 2 differeent surgeries but after getting it under control I have been able to quit taking meds both times and this doenst 'feel' like that though with anything going on in my stomach region I am sure it will get it irritated again.

pps I am admittadly a HUGE baby about stomach stuff, I suffered for years pre dx with the 'your crazy' stuff and I just hate this feeling

thanks!

If you have diarhea for more than two days you had better get a cdiff culture. Call you doctor and tell him you want an order for it! If you have been on antibiotics that can also cause the diarhea. What harm would it have done to get a culture--darn it!!! Damn, docs never listen! You want to take two different cultures in, when you go. Hope that helps.

This is also TMI...but, has the odor of the stool changed? That's our first tip-off that the c.diff is back. Once you smell the c.diff, you'll never forget it!! At least with us!

We also look for a foam-like appearnace to the stool, not just runny like diarhea. Admittedly, it's easier for us to tell since Emily is still (mostly) in diapers...

In our experience, c.diff hits Emily with a general, all over, feeling like crap walllop. She stops eating, stops drinking, sleeps a lot more... again, this will probably be different for an adult.

Get the culture. Once you get c.diff it's hard to get rid of, the earlier you treat it the better...Get the culture to be sure.

And, feel better. Diarhea is no fun for anyone of any age.

Since you have been on so many ABX are you putting any good stuff back into your gut??? I like Lactinex which are Lactobacillus tablets, you chew them, they tast a little like oatmeal, not bad at all, kinda tasty (the fools at the hospital didn't tell me thatthey were to be chewed) and you can take 4 tablets 3-4 times a day (again the idiots at the hospital didn't share that either I was only getting 1 twice a day). These were a real lifesaver for me a few months back. Last time I was on IV's I was so sick the stupid Doc said "then don't eat" - clearly not an option. Good luck, I feel your pain...
