Last nite I took my 4yr old to the e.r because his temp was 105.5 and pulse and resp were irratic this was still over 2 hrs from being able to have more meds for fever. I had taked to a dr and they told me if he's temp went up to bring him in. All the e.r did was tell me he had a vir and to go home. Because he sounds good for having cf and a fever can't harm him till it goes above 108. They dr spent less then 5 minutes with him. They told me to send him to school today. I didn't. At they time he should have been leaving for school his temp was 103 after ibupro and tylenol.

105 is way too high to just brush off. I've been to idiot ERs before. I only go to the ER at my own hospital now, specifically because they have a CF center. I still run into idiots, but the instances of pure stupidity are less.

The few times I've used the er, I've found the mere mention of CF puts the er docs on alert. My experience is that they may not know much about CF, but they seem to know enough that NO decisions get made without calling the CF center. My daughter had a perforated ear drum, they insisted that they couldn't give her antibiotics without CF center approval. And when she had a stomach virus, they called CF for a consult.

Is your ER the same hospital as the CF center? Because I feel that here since it is the same hospital there must be some unwritten (hmm, maybe its written somewhere) that CF trumps EVERYTHING and EVERYONE else!!! LOL!

I'm really surprised they told you to send him to school, and appalled that they told you not to worry unless his temp hit 108 -- that's ridiculous!!!!

108!!! Are they nuts! My son with cf has went to the ER about 3-4 times, everytime we have went we insist that the ER doctor call the CF doctor on call. (who is 2 hours away) Then the CF doctor makes all the decisions- we have never had an issue with the ER doctor doing this. The local ER doctor never has a clue as to what to do with a cf kid. Good luck with everything.
