also the pocket the port is in will also go through a phase of scarring over so that could be why its itchy too. is the skin over the port starting to become crunchy and bumpy? if so thats the pocket developing scar tissue. yummy *puke*

Hey Linds,

I've had that before with both of my ports, and sometimes I still get it even, even though I've had mine for a year and a half. I think it's just my body getting used to it, as well as the fact that the skin on my chest is the most sensitive skin on my body!

What I do is just put hydrocortizone cream on and it seems to stop the itching. In any case, don't worry too much about it!

Take care!

Like most people have already said, the itch is because it's healing. The scar at the insertion point will probably itch the most for awhile. The skin on that part of the body is very thin and sensitive, so be careful not to scratch if you can avoid it.

Don't forget that it is still winter and your skin is drier than usual anyway. Keep yourself well hydrated and do what you can to sooth the port. Be careful not to use too many gooey things on it though. I've found that the Benadryl anti-itch spray (it's in a white and aqua spray pump about the same size as a travel-size deodorant bar) is GREAT for combating the itch. It makes a nice little protective layer on the skin, which helps keep external irritants away too.

Hang in there, and try not to think about it too much! Power of suggestion you know <img src="">

p.s. I'm getting a new port tomorrow, so I'll be documenting my own port-op experiences and itchiness, etc.

To ease the itchiness you could put a warm flannel over it. that always helps kj to take the immediate itchiness away.
