IV colistin

Hello all. I need to go on IV's on Monday & it seems the only thing I am not resistant to in one of my PA strains is colistin. I remember my former CF doc once telling me that IV colistin was "nasty stuff," & my current doc tells me there are some bad neurological side effects from it. So, I am a nervous wreck & would really appreciate to hear from those of you who have done IV colistin. What side effects did you have? How long before they went away? Anything else I should know about? Thanks in advance for any input you can give me. I am so scared.

My Cory had used IV colistin several times. He always had to be hospitalized as there were some effects with the kidneys that needed to be closely watched. One other side effect is it can slow your breathing so he had to be placed on a monitor. He never had any problems from it but he was watched closely anyway. It has a risk of suppressing the respiratory system
He did have some "tingling". But that was gone after a couple of doses.
Sucesswise....It worked great for him especially when all other antibiotics weren't working

Hi Irishgal. I've been on Colistin via IV. Like you I was nervous about it when I had to go on it because I had heard about the nasty side effects.

I was on IV's in April and I usually get put on Cipro when it's time for IV's but after a week and a half of no progress my doctor decided to switch me to Colistin for the first time. Luckily I did not have any side effects. Hopefully that will ease your mind a little. After 4 weeks of Colistin and Zosyn both IV's, I was feeling a lot better.

I hope you feel better soon. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have been going on Iv Colistin the last 4 or 5 iv's i've had. The side effect i had that my Dr. told me i might have, is tingling on my tongue and my lips. The Dr. lowered my dose and it went away pronto. The iv Colistin worked well for me ! The dioseage goes by weight ( Like probably all iv antibiotics) so make sure nthey have a current weight on you so they can get the dose right.
