Thanks.

I guess my next question is, when you're NOT getting better (I actually am coughing up more and its going back the "usual" color, etc. on day 14), what do your docs usually do/change? Add a med? Change a med? Up the dosage?

Thanks. PLEASE let me know so i can suggest some things.

Sonia,
I am assuming you are off the iv's, are you on any oral antibiotics by chance? Although i am always on orals when i am not on iv's ( because of my cepacia) there was a time when i wasnt. I do remember a few times when the Dr. put me on an oral or two after the iv came out as a kind of back up to complete the assault on the infection i had. Also in the past( like 12 years ago), when i went on an iv i'd feel better within a week or so and my cough would completely go away for quite some time. As time went on i started noticing that my cough would still linger even though my pft's went up and i felt great. Now a days there is no getting rid of the cough no matter how long i am on an iv and i barely ever have a time where i dont have green sputum. Sometimes its lighter, sometimes darker. I'll never understand this but, a lot of times when i am just starting to get sick my sputum is lighter, almost like a yellow green when almost all the time it is normally more of a khaki color. Its is odd for it to be lighter when i am sick rather when i am well. But i am finding out the human body does a lot of odd things.
For the record i have had many many times where i dont feel good till almost a month after i am on iv's. Once i start getting active again, and living like i normally do i start to feel better and it usually reflects in my numbers. Lately it seems it takes longer and longer for me to get my numbers back where i want them.
I dont know how many years you have been getting iv's , but it could be possible that it is just going to take you longer than it used to , to get back to baseline or above.

hello. just thought i'd post another update from clinic today....

I went for my 15-day follow up today and my pfts were only up 2% (not acceptable to me after this long on IV meds)... Also, I'm coughing up more and more gunky colored crap as each day goes on. urgh. I'm still on IVs, but they finally decided to culture me last week and just got the results back today (have I mentioned how "on top of things" this clinic is?!?) and found I am now resistant to one of the meds I'm on. Had they actually done a culture when I started on meds (instead of relying on a 2 month old culture), perhaps they would have realized this?!

Anyway, they're switching the merreum (now resistant) to ceftazapime (? spelling) and I'll stay on another 2 weeks.

I can't help but think someone dropped the ball here. I was complaining last week of feeling worse and sicker and not bouncing back at all (fev1 was virtually unchanged) and had to nearly beg them to do a culture again to make sure I was sensitive to what they had me on. Seems a little odd no one bothered to culture before and find this out. URGH.

Anyway, thanks for the support everyone. If anyone has anymore answers or things to say regarding my questions above, that would be outstanding! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hopefully the next round of meds will work. I guess I'd be speaking to my doctor about the lack of culture prior to treatment, the lack of concern regarding YOUR concerns with your health not improving -- or at least send a note with your concerns so there's a paper trail and hopefully it won't happen again to you or someone else.

Is this your local clinic or the one you were going to out of state (UT?)... Maybe someone here has some suggestions where you can go to seek a second opinion. I do know of a few people who've sought treatment at Jewish in Denver as well as some other clinics...
