IV meds

Thanks for your ideas, Liza. I do think the paper trail is a good idea, especially if/when I decide to leave this clinic for good (which may happen sooner than later). I used to go to Utah, but now have been going to the local clinic cause the Utah commute was 400 miles ONE WAY. I'm pretty sure they'll be seeing me again though before we transfer from here. I just don't feel "safe" at this clinic. They micromanage way too much. I still have not actually seen a doctor (only nurse) since I was put on the meds 17 days ago. However, they did give me an appt. with the adult doc next week for follow up! WOO HOO! I'd been seeing just the childrens' docs since I'd gotten sick since that is who was available. urgh.

I hope no one minds that I bump this and ask for more experiences with this issue since very few people have answered. Thanks!

original question:

Hello, friends...

I am curious how YOU know when you're totally (or almost totally) better on IV meds? For example, do you still cough up gunk, though it may be thinner, lighter, etc. or does your cough disappear entirely? Do you still have shortness of breath or is that completely "cured" by the middle to end of a clean-out?

Sonia, I think that depends on how you are feeling overall.
From what I can remember I have always been coughing up junk and have always had SOB. My sputum was always green. However when it was time for IV's it usually got really really sticky and really dark green.
When IV's really started working my sputum sometimes got almost liquity, it would almost be water and just run out of the cup when I was coughing stuff up with physio. It really wasn't CF sputum anymore, I sometimes almost chocked on it cause it felt like I was drowning.
But anyway, usually it just got less sticky and lighter green. My SOB got a less too cause I could get more junk out.

Thanks, Marjolein! That's exactly the sort of experience I was hoping to hear... Not hoping, but looking for.

My cough has always completely dried up when on IVs, but this time around, my cough is virtually unchanged yet my pfts are slightly up. So, not sure if this means I need more time on meds to kick out the green/thick crap or if just pfts alone are enough to come off meds.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience.
