IV Port on Arm vs. Chest?

Hello! I had a mediport placed in my left upper arm a few years back. It was in the inside of my arm, so I really didn't feel it was too noticeable. Only if I had my arm out and not to my side did anyone ever notice it (I wore a strapless prom dress with it and it never showed). I really didn't notice it too much and I thought it was nice and a lot easier for my mother to access instead of trying to struggle with clothing. Also, if you get it placed in your arm you save those chest spots for later on, why the doc wanted one in my arm. The only issue I ever had with the device itself was that it somehow flipped over on its own but it just took a little bit for the doctor to position it back over. Hope that helps

Nick,

Thanks for your response. I'm so sorry it's been miserable ... it sounds it! Where in your arm is the port, if you don't mind me asking? I've heard about a forearm placement and an upper arm placement just above the elbow crease. I can see where both might be uncomfortable. My daughter is also very petite, 4'10" which may also be an issue with comfort (thin arms). Any thoughts?

I had mine placed in my upper left arm, just above the elbow and on the inside - barely noticeable, especially since it was a child-size one. Being on the inside of my arm, there was less chance that it would be bumped. When accessed, I just wore long sleeves and nobody was aware. I chose to have it in my arm rather than my chest because I'm short and extremely slim. I was worried that the car seat belts would rub on it and irritate it - especially in warm weather when not wearing a coat. I figured it didn't matter which side it was on, since I would either be driving or be a passenger - it would get rubbed one way or the other!

Thanks so much for your helpful response to my port question. You are absolutely adorable and remind me of my daughter ! Yes, please send pictures if you're willing (I'll send my email to you via private message). My daughter's very much on the fence about this now, starting to open up about the chest port BUT also starting to think maybe she wants to bag it altogether and not get one at all. I feel that if she's headed for getting a port anyway, why keep getting PICC lines until her arms are all scarred up and they can't get a peripheral vein to work. I say, just get the port sooner rather than later. In the end, it's up to her but I want her to feel empowered to make the most informed decision either way.

Would love your feedback on how your chest port has worked out for you.

Oh, I thought I was responding to only Tamara there! Well, EVERYONE's responses were really, really helpful. Much food for thought. I'll share all of your comments with my daughter. Even if it's a simple procedure to the surgeons, it's a big decision for her for something she'll be toting around for YEARS.

About the low profile port, do you know the name of it so I can Google it?

Thanks again for all the great comments.
