IVs at home

I get a jump start in the hospital(mainly because of the aggressive CPT since meds alone only do so much) & then I usually come home on iv.

One time I came home without a picc line so the home nurse tried to do it at home with no numbing cream....Can we say NEVER again.

So now I have a picc line when I come home & the night I get home the nurse comes out & goes over the tons of paperwork etc. Meds are delivered & I do my nighttime dose while the nurse is here.

The first time they were here it took forever. I know how to operate things etc & they feel comfortable with that now.

The last time I came home on iv's, they asked if the nurse could come the next day. This meant that I would administer my first dose (meds were delivered usual time) without them.

As long as the meds are the same I have no issues.

Its a bit overwhelming for the first time, but like so many other things with CF....you adjust & it becomes 2nd nature.

Good Luck!

We do home IVs as well. Thus far, we've gone inpatient initially. Pulmo and I discussed that next time, we'll schedule the PICC outpatient arrange for home health to do peaks and troughs outpatient and stay home.

We do everything. The nurses come for their paperwork and that's it. Though, if we're going to do the labs outpatient as well they'll have to come for those, or we'll have to travel to a lab.

Our son has seveal significant complicating conditions. Putting him inpatient is VERY bad for his mental health if it can be avoided. Last hospital stay, he nearly had to be admitted to the Psych hospital afterward. Instead, he assaulted me and I got hospitalized--cause that was somehow better.

Thankfully, his doctors understand and work very hard to balance all his needs. If a hospital cannot avoided, then we go without obection. But, if we have an at-home option we take it every time.
