Hi Jenifer. Welcome to the site. I am sorry you are going through this, but I am so glad you have a doctor who pushed to find out what was causing your daughter's problems. It took 15 years for me to find a doctor who finally tested my son. Since his diagnosis, he is healthier than he's ever been.

We have cats and dogs, and I would never consider taking those away from my son. We have even taken the dogs to the hospital parking lot, and wheeled Jordan out to see them when he was admitted. Those animals give him so much joy. Unless the doctor tells you that your children are highly allergic to them, I'd keep the pets. Chances are, you would already know if they are.

Your family is understandable overwhelmed with this. Your MIL has no doubt googled CF, and read the worst. Tell her to come here, and read about real people with CF living real lives. Take everything a step at a time, and try to concentrate on what you CAN do now, because there is a lot you can do.

We will be here to help you too. Ask anything you need to, and vent all you need to. Please keep us posted on you and your kiddos.

Thank you all so much. Kellianne used to have hives a lot when she was younger. Not sure if that could be related to the CF, but she was tested for allergies & found to not be allergic to anything they tested her for. They tested her for dogs, cats, horses, a bunch of trees, grasses, dusts & molds & she came up negative on all of them. They didn't have anything to test her for the bird.
I am a English Labrador breeder. We show our dogs as well as do hunt tests. Kellianne loves showing the dogs, but they really are so big next to her. They are so calm & gentle & my male that she was showing in Junior Showmanship was so great with her, but it was hard for her to reach his hind legs to stack him.
We were offered a champion Cavalier King Charles Spaniel last year from a famous breeder/handler. His name is Godzilla. Kellianne & Godzilla have such an amazing bond & I can't imagine how upset she would be if we had to give him back.
Of course I will do whatever I need to for my kids, but my dogs are part of our family. I am so glad to hear everyone's great advice.
When we go to the doctor next week I will be sure to get a copy of her results & let you know what her mutations are.
Jenifer, mom to Kellianne-9 with CF & Brandon 5-being tested next week.

Hi Jenifer, Welcome to our world. The initial shock of the diagnosis will wear off. I found it was very helpful to immerse myself in learning about CF. Knowledge and up to date information is very encouraging.

I'd recommend that you also visit www.cff.org. That's the US Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. They have some excellent online videos explaining CF. They also have an excellent DVD which paints a positive outlook and gives a realistic snapshot of how CFF is funding research to tackle the disease from all angles. I think it's called 50 years of hope or something like that. You might force your MIL to watch that one.

I've got CF and I'm 43. Infact I didn't even know I had CF until this year, despite a lifetime of recurring lung and "strep throat" infections and bouts of IBS (though I am pancreatic sufficient!). Hang in there, having the diagnosis will help with keeping Kellianne's lungs clear and healthy! Prevention and preservation is the name of the game. ~Juliet

Hi,

I have a form of CF and so does my 21 year old son. We have made really major lifestyle changes to help us get well. We have spent the last 7 or so years working on that. He is off all medication and I am down to one maintenance drug (half a pill of OTC gauifenisen a day). We've thrown out tons and tons of stuff in the process of getting well. BUT, we are VERY careful about the timing of throwing things out because getting rid of stuff can cause a big healing crisis. Since I am currently the sole bread-winner, we have to make sure that throwing stuff out doesn't make me too sick to go to work. And when I was a lot sicker, we had to make sure that throwing things out didn't land me in the ER. (Think of how awful drug withdrawal can be.)

So I would suggest that you not make any big, sudden changes and if you do determine that some or all of the animals need to go, then get rid of them gradually. In my experience, it's safer to do it that way.
